F. Paul Pfaff

Joseph Pfaff, my grandfather, emigrated to the United States from Germany.
He settled near Chillicothe, Missouri, married Anna Hindbach. In 1900 they
moved to Barber County, near Hazelton, where he bought land and farmed.
My mother's parents, the Charles Wainscotts moved to Hazelton in March,
1902. They bought land and farmed there also; the last farm they bought
now belongs to Juther Wainscott, their youngest son. I lease and farm it
     for him at this time.
My parents were Fred B. and Ethel (Wainscott) Pfaff. I had five sisters,
Idris, Reva, Arline, Dorothy, and Shirley; two brothers, Curtis and Kenneth.
All of us attended school and graduated from Hazelton High School.
I was born on a farm three miles south of Hazelton. My parents bought the
place in Hazelton in 1922 from Miles Robinson. They lived here until their
deaths. My wife, Adele, and I bought the place from the estate and are still
     living here.
My folks started a dairy. We bottled milk and delivered it to the doors
around town. We also delivered to three stores, two restaurants, the hotel,
and drugstore. There were always plenty of milkers, as it was all done by
hand, and also lots of help for the delivery twice a day. Those old jersey
cows helped pull my folks through the Depression, raise eight children, and
     furnish employment for them.
My wife, Adele Anderson, daughter of Aaron L. and June Anderson, was born
in Wilson County, Kansas; graduated from high school at Borger, Texas; and
attended Venus Beauty Academy, Wichita. She retired from the postal service
     in February, 1979.
I went to work in the Panhandle Texas oil fields in 1933. Adele and I were
married in June 1936, living in Skellytown and Amarillo a number of years.
We moved back to Hazelton to take over my father's farming in 1943.
I was employed in pipeline department by Cities Service Gas Company in 1955
at the Medicine Lodge Division, where I worked until I retired in June, 1977,
as division foreman. I continued my farming during these years, with the
     help of our sons.
Frederich Paul, Jr., our oldest son, was born in Pampa, Texas. He graduated
from Hazelton High in 1957. He attended Kansas State, Pratt Juco, and Vocational
School, in Kansas City. He operated his Body and Fender Shop in Medicine
Lodge for several years. Then he went to work for Farm Bureau Insurance as
an adjustor, later changing to American Family Insurance. Now is in St.
Joseph, Missouri, as Division Claim Manager. Fred married Katharine of
Unionville, Missouri. They have three children, Paul David, Tracey, and
     Janelle.
Curtis Aaron, our second son, ws born in Hardtner; he graduated from
Hazelton High School in 1963. He attended electronics school in Wichita,
then went to work for Boeing and Lear Aircraft. He is now employed by
Cities Service Gas Co. as an engineer at Alva, Oklahoma, after spending
some time at Buffalo and Guymon, Oklahoma. Curtis married Linda Ricke of
Sharon; they have two boys, Kenneth and Erich. Linda was appointed Post-
master of Hardtner in December, 1978.
Our youngest son, Stephen Wayne, was also born at Hardtner and also
graduated from Hazelton High in 1965. He attended Wichita Stte for two
years, his college was interrupted by the Kansas Air National Guard. He
was sent to Korea for one year, when the Koreans captured the Pueblo. He
graduated from Northwestern State of Alva, Oklahoma. He was employed by
Cities Service Gas Co. at Ulysses, Kansas, as a production engineer for
two years. He is now employed by Ilance Oil & Gas Company at Hobbs, New
Mexico, as Gas Contracts Manager. Steve married Noell Ewbanks of Alva,
Oklahoma. They have two children, Amanda and Wade.
We have enjoyed our life in the Barber County are, the friends and
     activities our family grew with.
