Everett Forrest Phillips

Everett Forrest Phillips, born April 28, 1881, was one of ten children
born to Bennett E. and Amanda Jane (Harris) Phillips in Lafayette County,
Missouri. His mother died when he was 9 years old, and he was cared for
      by relatives.
When Everett was 14, he left home and worked on a ranch in Oklahoma
for about a year before coming to Barber County. Here he continued as a
cowboy and ranch hand while attending school, working for Jim Elsea,
McIntyre Ranch, and Burl Davis Ranch.
February 12, 1918, he married Nancy Septer at his brother Cyrus' home
in Lake City. They lived on the old DeGeer Ranch, owned by Davis, until
1927, when they moved to Lake City. Everett took up carpenter work and
continued this trade until his death July 10, 1958.
Everett and Nancy were both members of the Lake City Methodist Church.
He had enjoyed membership in the Kansas Livestock Association in his
early years. One highlight of his life was attending the World's Fair in
St. Louis in 1904. A joyous occasion for the Phillips was the celebration
      of their 40th wedding anniversary.
Nancy and Everett struggled through the Depression and hard times with
their family, like so many others. All three children were graduated from
the Lake City High School. Both of their sons were in the service in World
War II. Ivan spent time in the Pacific in the Air Force. Boyd was in the
Army in the ETO, where he was wounded by enemy gun fire. Those were anxious
      times for all the family.
The Phillips children are: 1. Mary Esther, born March 28, 1919, in
Comanche County; married to Orville Freeman, August 1, 1942. They live
      in Medicine Lodge. 2. Boyd Evert, born April 7, 1923, in Barber County;
married to Laurice Hiett, April 5, 1947; living in Uraven, Colorado. 3.
Ivan Harris, born August 27, 1925 in Barber County; married to Jean
Robertson, June 20, 1967; living in Pratt, Kansas.
Nancy married John Holser on October 12, 1964. He died July 21, 1970.
Nancy is now a resident of Fort Dodge, Kansas.
