Phillip Fredrick Phye
Phillip Fredrick Phye was born in Paw Paw, Michigan, in 1845. As a
young boy, he moved with his parents to Davis County, Iowa. When he
was seventeen years of age, he joined the Union Army and served for
three years until he was honorably discharged in 1865. He married
Amanda Smith in 1967, and they were blessed with eight children.
Because of the damp climate, they lost two of their children. After
21 years of marriage Amanda also died. Ten years later he decided to
move to Barber County, Kansas. So it was, in 1898, he and his son
John Fred made the trip to Kansas in a covered wagon.
He later became a member of GAR post in Medicine Lodge. Althought
short in stature, he felt honored to be allowed to carry the U.S. flag
in the patriotic parades. One of his jobs was to carry the mail from
Medicine Lodge to Sun City.
Fred, the son, worked for several years in the Johnson Livery Stable.
In 1906 while working on the Skinner Ranch, he married Artie Urton,
daughter of Geroge and Margaret Urton. Their two children, Charley and
Margaret, were born while living in Lake City.
Charley started school in Lake City, but as the family moved to rented
farms in other areas, he and Margaret (Long) attended North Star and
Walstead school. They both graduated from Medicine Lodge High School,
where Charley's main interest had been vocational agriculture. After
their graduation, the family bought the farm north of Medicine Lodge
where we started our married life.
In 1946 Charley and I (Dorene Schnelle) were married in the home of
my brother, Reverend Dayle Schnelle in Arkansas City. Our two children,
Fred and Linda, were born during the years we lived on the family farm.
In 1955 we rented our farm and moved to a ranch north of Lake City
where we had more grassland for our herd of black Angus Cattle. Besides
the cattle, Charley raised a few quarter horses which were special to
all the family.
Both Fred and Linda attended school at Coats. As parents, we bacame
involved in the school and 4-H activities of our children. I was a den
mother for Cub Scouts and Girl Scout Leader, but 40HY was the place we
both worked the most. I was sewing leader for several years, and Charley
helped with the livestock and the tractor maintenance projects.
In 1968 we moved back to our farm, where Charley farmed until his
health failed, and he had to retire.
Fred, our son, married Anita Laas, daugter of Elmer and Mary Laas of
Brookville, Kansas, in 1969. He graduated from K.U. in 1961. He is now
a pharmacist in Asbury Hospital in Salina, where they reside with their
two children, Kristy Lynn and Scott Eric.
Linda graduated from Fort Hays State in 1971 as a Home Ec. major. She
and Michael Kastle, son of Robert and Amy Kastle of Colorado Springs,
were married in 1972. Mike is presently high school principal at Ransom,
Kansas, where they now reside with their daughter, Candace Leigh.
