Franklin Poindexter

Farming was a family affair when Franklin Poindexter was growing up. He
was the youngest of seven children of George W. and Ada (Hofsteater)
Poindexter. Franklin was born 9-4-1914, seven miles southwest of Medicine
Lodge, on one of the Boggs Ranches. His mother died when he was 10 years
old, and George cared for the family; Lillian, Clarence, Edwin, Mildred,
     Mabel, Robert, and Franklin.
They all worked the fields, planting and harvesting the crops. As the
children married and left the home, their father had the care of Edwin,
an invalid son, and Franklin did the farming and cared for the livestock.
Franklin attended Pleasant Hill and Sunflower Schools and finished his
Junior year at MLHS. He had to assume farming responsibilities due to the
failing health of his father, who died in 1940.
While Mr. Boggs visited the ranch, it was quite an occasion. He always
brought some gifts for the children and took them with him on a trip to
see the cattle over the ranch.
By 1939 a romance was budding with Eilene Melton of Gerlane, whom Franklin
had known many years. She was the daughter - second of four children - of
Erwin and Nellie (Colborn) Melton. Eilene and Franklin married in June,
1943. They continued to live on the Boggs Ranch until 1946, when they
purchased a farm at Theyer, in Neosho County. While there a son, Robert
     Erwin, was born October 1948.
They sold that farm and moved near Sawyer in Pratt County. In November
1952, another son, John Franklin, blessed their home, and in June 1955,
Donald Wayne arrived to complete their family.
Franklin temporarily gave up farming in 1951 and worked for JoMar Dairies
in Pratt for 16 years. In 1960 they moved into Pratt to help Mrs. Melton
operate her laundry until her death. Once again they farmed a small acreage
west of Pratt; and in 1968, they moved to Medicine Lodge, where Franklin
worked for ranchers and in a service station.
Robert attended school in Denver and later moved to Dodge City, where he
married Donna Stuart. A baby girl, Nicole, blessed their home in 1973.
This marriage ended in divorce. Robet later moved to Wyoming, where he
married Mary Land. They have a daughter, Mariah Dawn.
John joined the Navy, submarine division, after he graduated from MLHS.
He was stationed in Hawaii three years. During this time, Franklin, Eilene,
her sister, Elora Skidmore, and brother, Sidney Melton, flew there for a
visit. They visited the Memorial, USS Arizona and will never forget that
time on Pearl Harbor. They drove on Haleakola Crater on Maui, walked in
sands on Waikiki Beach. They took a ride in a Hydrofoil boat to the island
of Maui. John is unmarried, working, and studying air-conditioning and
     refrigeration.
Donald attended school in Wichita, later returned to Medicine Lodge where
he married Teresa Rhea. They have a daughter, Janiza Lea.
Franklin passed away in December 1976, at age 62. He is buried in Highland
cemetery. Eilene is helping care for Mrs. Isabella Best at Medicine Lodge
Memorial Hospital. She worships at the First Baptist Church.
Eilene Pindexter and Dillman Ash were married November 17, 1979. Lana
Brook Poindexter was born August 20, 1979, Encampment, Wyoming.
Jennifer Lin Poindexter was born October 8, 1979, Medicine Lodge.
