Ed Powell, Jr.

Ed, Jr., was nine years old when he came to Hazelton. He attended Circle
country school and graduated from Hazelton High School. He enlisted in the
Army on December 5, 1941, and served in England, France, and Germany during
  WWII.
On December 23, 1945, he married Edna Mae Slack. They have two small
children - Kay Lynn, born May 18, 1948, and Roger Edward, born May 15, 1954.
In 1947 Jr. and I rented the Will burns farm, which we bought in 1964.
Our children were born and raised on this farm.
Ed, Jr., farmed and worked for the railroad for 17 years. He has also
  collected antique cars and tractors.
We moved to Hazelton in 1964 and lived there while our children were
finishing their schooling. In 1969 I, Edna Mae, was elected Mayor of the
City of Hazelton (the first woman mayor) for two terms. I resigned the
position to move back to the farm after the death of Ed, Sr. Ed, Jr.,
took over the farming operation for his mother.
We raised our children in the Hazelton Methodist church. At his time
Roger is on the board of Trustees of the church and is in the process of
lowering the church bell from the belfry to a place in the church yard. It
will be a memorial to his wife, Linda, who passed away on October 22, 1977.
Our daughter, Kay Lyy, was chosen in 1964, to go on the Methodist education
tour, a very rewarding experience for her. At this time Kay Lynn lives in
Columbia, Missouri, and is a Registered Radiation Tech at the Ellis Fischell
Cancer Research Center. And she is still an avid lover of horses.
In 1973 Roger married Linda Sue Carver at Beloit, KS. They moved to
Hazelton after they finished their schooling in Salina. Roger was in Vo-Tech
school and Linda in the School of Cosmetology.
Roger is engagd in farming with his dad, and this makes four generations
of the family that have lived on and worked this farm.
