Ed Powell, Sr.
Ed Powell was born of pioneer parents, W.B. and Laura Powell, in Buffalo,
Missouri, on May 7, 1892. He came to Barber County at the age of 14 to work
as a day laborer. Within a short time he was employed by the Skinner Ranch
in Lake City, where he spent 17 years.
On February 16, 1917, Ed was marrried to Mary Wilson, daughter of J.S.
and Emily Wilson. Mary's family had pioneered in Barber County, moving
from King City, Missouri, to Hazelton in the early 1900's. She was born
on December 20, 1895.
Ed and Mary had two sons, Ed, Jr., born March 16, 1923, and Paul Dean.
In 1932 Ed bought the J.S. Wilson farm at hazelton and moved his family
there. They completed their new house on the farm ini 1947, and celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary on February 26, 1967,, with their children
and friends.
Ed and Mary lived and worked together on their farm for 40 years, raising
prized Hereford cattle, which Ed enjoyed so much.
One story I remember my father-in-law, Ed, telling so much was the time
he took a truck load of hogs to Wichita to sell. When he paid the commission
and the trucking, he still owed 98 cents. This was in the Depression years.
We laughted a lot about this, but I am sure at the time it was nothing to
laugh about.
