Bert and Alan Probst
Bert L. Probst, born in Conway Springs, Kansas, in 1901 married Lora M. Allen,
born in Lamont, Oklahoma, in 1898. They had four children, one son and three
daughters, one of which died in infancy.
They owned and operated a drug store in Argonia, Kansas, for 27 years, then
moved to Medicine Lodge, Kansas in 1954. Bert assisted Edwin N. Carper in the
Carper Drug, as Pharmacist. In 1960 their son, Alan Probst, born, 1922, in
Conway Springs, Kansas, and his wife Geraldine R. Bobbit Probst, born in Decatur
county, Kansas in 1927, both graduates of the University of Kansas and Pharmacists
moved to Medicine Lodge from Libera, Kansas. They with Bert and Lora Probst,
purchased the Carper Drug and renamed it Probst Pharmacy.
Alan and Geraldine brought with them five sons: Evan, David L., Stevan A.,
Ronald L., and Daniel J., ranging in age from 1 year to 9 years of age. One other
son died in infancy.
The partnership of Probst Pharmacy continued to 1974, when Bert retired due to
his eyesight; Lora retired also, and they still continue to live in Medicine
Lodge. The Pharmacy continues to operate under the partnership of Alan and
Geraldine, or popularly known as Jerry. Alan and Jerry had twin girls, Julie Ann
and Mary Ellen, born to them in 1963, and a son, John M., born in 1965.
All of the children have or will graduate from the Medicine Lodge schools. Evan
Probst attended two years at Wichita University. On May 2, 1977, while working as
a welder repairing pipe on a grain elevator in western Kansas, Evan was pulled off
to his death. David L. Probst attended 2 1/2 years at Wichita University, married
Sherry Shaddock, and has three children: Jennifer, Christopher, and Andrea. They
reside in Medicine Lodge, and David is a driller in the oil fields. Stevan A. Probst
resides at home, is engaged to marry Lindi Snyder of Coats in the summer and also
works in the oil fields. Ronald L. Probst attended auto mechanics school in Wichita,
married Jolene Russell of Topeka. They have a daughter named Keri Jean. Ronald is
part owner of an auto parts firm in Topeka, Kansas. Daniel J. Probst attended one
semester of Junior College at Hutchinson, lives at home, and works in the oil fields.
Alan Probst served two terms as city councilman and one term as Mayor of Medicine
Lodge, Kansas. He also served two terms as President of the Chamber of Commerce. He
is presently serving as First Vice-President of the Lions Club.
The Alan Probst family are members of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. The Bert
Probst family are members of the First Methodist Church.
