Walter PUlliam
Walter Franklin Pulliam was born February 16, 1893, the sixth son of
Robert Franklin Pulliam (born March 3, 1857) and Pairlee Smith Pulliam
(born June 1, 1865), in Ripley County, Missouri, on a farm near Tucker.
In the year 1900 the family moved in a covered wagon to Sedgwick,
Kansas. They later bought 80 acres of land in Harper County, 3/4 mile
north and 1 mile east of Crisfield, Kansas (A lovely little town which
has now disappeared).
August 1, 1917, Walter married Ruth V. Brooks, daughter of James
Benjamen Brooks (born October 13, 1874) and Etta Margaret Brooks (born
April 4, 1881).
In 1919 Walter went into railroading; in 1920, he was promoted to
section foreman; and in 1925 he was transferred to Barber County. They
moved to Sharon, Kansas, with four small children: Jess Willard, Elmer,
Jack, and Betty. Later Dorthy, John, Norma Jean, Mary Ellen and LaVeda
were born. Mary Ellen passed away March 25, 1937, at age of one year.
Being a farmer at heart, Walter purchased 80 acres of land and rented
320 acres south of Sharon. This gave the children plenty of work and fun,
as there was fishing and swimming and lots of room for the horses which
they loved so much. An enjoyable Sunday to them was to have their friends
out for pony rides.
In October, 1934, Walter and Ruth went back to Missouri to visit relatives.
They were given a spinning wheel which was handmade and had been given to
Walter's mother and father on their wedding day, November 2, 1882. This
spinning wheel was borrowed and used in several Peace Treaty Pageants. It
is still in the family and in Barber County, now belonging to Walter's
grandson, James Walter PUlliam, who with his wife, Linda Merrihew Pulliam,
lives in Kiowa, Kansas.
In 1949 the Walter PUlliams purchased the Kin Bell farm south of Sharon.
Later, in 1957, the eldest son, Jess Willard Pulliam, bought this farm
from his parents; he still lives there with his wife, Rita Niemann Pulliam.
Two other children also live in Barber County, Betty Boor of Sharon and
LaVeda DeLong of Kiowa, Kansas.
Walter was very active in the Sharon community. He served on the City
Council, and Boy Scout Committee, acted as City Judge, and served twelve
years on the school board.
Walter and Ruth resided in Kiowa, Kansas, after his retirement. He passed
away October 28, 1960. His wife Ruth now resides in Attica, Kansas.
