J.H. Rader
Joseph Harrison Rader was born August 2, 1919, on a farm south east of Capron, Woods
County, Oklahoma, to Joseph Glen Rader and Gertrude Miller Rader. His mother died when
he was nine years of age. He was placed in the orphan's home at Helena, Oklahoma, for
six months and later stayed in the foster home of Emmett Abel, northwest of Alva, for
three years. It was at Literary in the fall of 1939 that he met his future wife and
asked her that evening for their first date the following week.
Leona Maxine Harrington was born June 10, 1923, to Cornelius James and Rebecca Enola
Nordyke Harrington. Joe and Maxine were united in marriage on October 2, 1940, and spent
the first 8 years on a farm in Woods County, Oklahoma, and part-time in Alva, Oklahoma.
Two children were born to them during these years.
Wesley Eugnen Rader was born September 20, 1941. He is presently married to the
former Sandi McKinney. They live in Hardtner where his is principal of the South Barber
Junior High School. They have two children, Michael Eugene, born April 26, 1968, and
Michelle Denise, born February 3, 1971.
Joyce Nadine was born October 2, 1944, and is married to Larry McCarty. They reside
in Kiowa, Kansas; he barbers in Kiowa and Hardtner. They have three children: Debra
Elaine, born September 26, 1967; Dan Edward, born April 14, 1971; and Duane Ernest, born
November 15, 1972.
Joe and Maxine farmed and lived on Maxine's parents' farm north of Alva until Maxine's
brother, James Harrington, came home from the service and took over the farm. On June 1,
1946, Donald Dean Myers, whose parents had died, came to live with the Raders. He was
14 years old at the time and remained with them until he entered the service in 1950.
In August of 1948 the Raders moved to Hardtner, Kansas, and lived in the Lora Cox
house south of town. Joe was employed at the W.E. Sheddy Elevator in the day time and
ran the movie Projectors at the DeLuxe Theater at night. Maxine worked at the Hotel
Coffee Shop during the day and sold tickets at the DeLuxe Theater at night.
In August of 1949 they purchased their present home in Hardtner, from W.E. Sheddy.
On January 1, 1951, Joe went to work for the Elwood Township for $150.00 per month. The
three township board members were Howard Walker, A.M. Webb, and Bill Sterling.
During 1967, they purchased the Lora Cox place south of Hardtner, wehre they had lived
previously. Since that time they have purchased other rental properties in Hardtner.
Joe served six years on the Hardtner City Council and four years as Mayor. He is
presently employed by Elwood Township.
