Henry Rankin
One of the pioneer and well known families of Barber County was the
Rankin family. Their farming operations were in the extreme part of

the Ridge Road, Twp. 31 South, Range 10 west.
My grandfather was Henry Rankin and my grandmother Mary Ann Archibald
Rankin. Henry Rankin was born October 23, 1826, in Antrim County, Ireland.
He married Mary Anne Archibald December 25, 1852; died March 23, 1910;
and was buried in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge. He acquired his farm
land from 1898 to 1902. Mary Anne Archibald was born June 18, 1839 in

They had eleven children, Jeanette Kernohan, James, Hugh, Grace,
Margaret Harrison, Mary Anne, Henry, John, Archibald, George, and Emma.
All are deceased.
They came to the United State in 1869, living in Pennsylvania where
Henry worked in the coal mines. Later they moved to Fountain County,
Indiana, and in 1883 moved to Sharon, Kansas. They resided in Harper,

along the Ridge Road. At one time he was elected State Representative for
Barber County.
He married Harriet Mae Osborn and to this union seven children were born:
1. Hazel (Mrs. Raymond Donovan), Medicine Lodge; 2. Gladys (Mrs. A.L.
Griesinger), Anthony, Kansas; 3. Eugene Osborn, who married Ruby L. Mitchell
of Kiowa, Kansas; he passed awayy 18, 1962; buried at Kiowa; 4. Mary Evelyn
(Mrs. Kenneth R. Grigsby), Sun City, Arizona; 5. Merle Emmerson, Vancouver,
Washington; his wife is Leola J. Toombs from Medicine Lodge; 6. Laile

Maurice, Broomfield, Colorado; his wife is Carol Price from Anthony, Kansas.
My mother, Harriett Mae Osborn (Hattie Mae), was born March 25, 1883, on
a farm near Cheney, Kansas. Her father was John M. Osborn and her mother
was Evaline Nichols. Mother died January 30, 1970, buried in Highland Cemetery,
