Obed Reed
Obed Reed, son of Mr. and Mrs. P.D. Reed was born June 9, 1867, at
Salina, Saline County, Kansas. He married Sarah Ann Ashton December
14, 1887, at Herman, Kansas. Sarah Ann was born December 24, 1867,
at Mechanicville, Pennsylvania.
Obed and Sarah lived at Herman, Kansas. Obed worked as a stone cutter,
cutting stones for fence posts and homes. William Henry was born at
Herman, Kansas, June 8, 1889.
Obed worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and moved to Victor, Kansas.
Aflred Day was born February 17, 1895. Flossie Maud was born June 12,
1896, at Yorkstown, Kansas.
When Congress approved the bill to open the Cherokee Strip to home-
steaders, Obed and family went by covered wagon to Alva, Oklahoma. The
land of the Cherokee was silent, lonely, open, free, and waiting for
people to bring it to life.
Obed and family made the run into the Cherokee Strip by covered wagon,
taking with them enough supplies and water to last several days. William,
14, and Alfred, 11, helped take care of the horse and camp chores.
The family settled on a 160-acre claim twenty miles northwest of Alva,
Oklahoma, and 2 miles east of Winchester, Oklahoma. They dug a dugout,
hauling their supplies from Alva and Winchester. Sarah found some clay
mud na creek. They carried the mud in buckets and smoothed it on the
floor of the dugout; it soon hardened like cement. William helped Obed
walk behind the plow, and soon they had some of the sod broke. LuElla
was born in the dugout August 2, 1904.
Obed carried mail from Alva to Winchester for several years. He drove
his team and wagon 20 miles to Alva, then on to Winchester.
Because of poor health, Obed and Sarah sold their land and moved to
Sharon, Kansas. George Franklin was born in Sharon, August 4, 1907.
Obed and Sarah lived in Barber County and farmed many years. Sarah
died March 10, 1937, and was buried in Highland Cemetery at Medicine
Lodge, Kansas. Obed continued to farm and died June 21, 1953, and was
buried beside Sarah in Highland Cemetery.
William married Orpha Porter, November 12, 1915. Their children are
Flossie and Charles. William died October 24, 1956.
Alfred married Viva Bonnell, December 12, 1915. Their only child was
Kenneth. Alfred died in 1968.
Flossie married Walter Porter, June 24, 1914. Their children were Lester,
Eloise, Ralph, and Ruth. Flossie died July 8, 1963.
LuElla married Curtis Mease, July 30, 1927. Their children were Marie,
Earl, and Donna. LuElla died December 22, 1978.
Geroge, who lives in Medicine Lodge at 305 W. Second St., is the only
living child of the Obed Reed family living. He married Margaret Bell,
July 25, 1941. Their children are Fr. Dennis Reed and Gary Reed.
