Charles Revert
Charles Revert and Maggie Olson repeated their wedding vows on November
15, 1911, which began a marriage that lasted nearly forty-seven years.
Father was born in Missouri, moving to Kansas while quite young. He spent
his early youth traveling the USA in search of adventure. Mother, the
daughter of Danish immigrants, was born near Kiowa. Later the family
homesteaded near Lookout, Oklahoma.
After their marriage, my parents started life together in a farming
community south of Lake City. During the course of 23 years, they moved
to various farms along Sand Creek. Four children came to make their home
in the Revert household - Donald, Esther, Gerald, and Thelma.
Life on the farm was difficult at times - the draughts and hailstorms
ruined crops, the dust storms of the 30', the tornado that ripped thru
our farm and destroyed property and lifestock, the fire taht burned our
barn and filled our favorite pony. However, as I reminisce, pleasant
experiences are predominant and linger in my memory - wading in the clear,
cool water of "Old Sandy", building castles in the sand, enjoying Ringling's
under the big top, stringing pop corn for the Christmas tree, going barefoot
on the first warm day of spring, and a host of other memories.
I attended a country until I graduated from the eighth grade. My high
school years were spent at Hardtner High, where I graduated in 1932. Money
was scarce and luxuries few, but my parents made it possible for me to have
a class reing by selling chickens from their flock.
I spent several years teaching in Barber County's rural schools. Box
suppers, Christmas programs, and song festivals were all important school
activities. However, the highlight of the year was the last day of school
when community residents gathered at the schoolhouse with well filled
baskets of home cooked food. The day was spent feasting, playing ball, and
exchanging small talk.
In 1934 my family moved to the Lasswell community, which was composed of
friendly and helpful neighbors. The area residents soon became and still
remain our cherished friends. We attended church at Lasswell and Union
Chapel. Parties at various farm homes were the main source of entertainment
for the young people.
The lure of the city caused my family to leave the farm, one by one, and
by 1946 the entire family lived in Wichita. Father left us in 1958, and
Mother followed in 1963.
I worked for the government during my early years in Wichita. In 1949 I
was married to Robert Startzman, who was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad.
Our son, Gary, is a graduate of Wichita State University and is employed
by the City of Wichita. We all remain in Wichita, except Gerald who resides
in Escondido, California.
Donald, Gerald, Thelma, and I wish to dedicate this small portion of
Barber County History, in loving memory, to our parents, who shared their
time, love, and devotion with relatives and friends, and especially with
us.
