Lura Rickard

Lura Bea (Hensley) Rickard was born at Mansfield, Missouri, February 20,
1909, daughter of Bruce and Liza Jane (Newton) Hensely. The Henselys came
to Gerlane, Kansas, in 1910 in a covered wagon. She had three sisters and
two brothers, Mabel Harbaugh, Elma Groendyucke, Troye Rose, Arvel Hensley,
and Oral Hensley. She attended Roundup School, 1 mile west of Gerlane.
Lura married Charles Elsworth (Bud) Rickard in 1931, son of Charles and
Mima Rickard. He was born at Zenda, Kansas, growing up in Kingman County.
Bud worked for farmers around Medicine Lodge. They moved to Truesdale in
Edwards County, where Bruce was born in 1931, 2 weeks after moving there.
The dust storms were so bad that they had to put a damp cloth over the
crib, so Bruce wouldn't choke. In 1937 they returned to Medicine Lodge,
and Bud started working for the Ice Company. In 1940 he started working
for the State Highway Maintenance Department, where he worked for 15 years
until the time of his death in October, 1955.
Lura started baby sitting and dressmaking until starting to work for the
Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital Kitchen Staff. She had to retire September
2, 1977, after 20 years, due to poor health, making her home at 604 N. Main
     in Medicine Lodge.
Bruce Everett grew up in Medicine Lodge, going to school and graduating
from High School in 1949. He attended 2 years at Pratt Community College.
He spent 1 1/2 years in the Army and is now working in the oil fields. In
1956 Bruce married Billie Sharkey, born in Kremlin, Oklahoma. She was
teaching at the time and is still teaching in her 10th year at Sharon,
Kansas. They have four children: Ricki Ann, attending school at Edmond,
Oklahoma; Burce Everett II (Buddy), working for an oil company; Tonya Sue
is going to Dodge City Community College; and Dirk William is a Junior at
     Medicine Lodge High School.
Lura enjoys crocheting, gardening, playing cards with her friends and
     relatives, and visiting.
