Gertrude Murphy Rinke
I was born on August 17, 1912, on a farm just east of Medicine Lodge. My
parents were Clifford Eugene and Pearl Inez (Woodward) Murphy. My grandfather,
Thomas Joseph Murphy, born in 1850 in Ohio, son of Joseph D. and Mary Ann
(Cramer) Murphy, married Nancy Pierce, daugher of Jasper and Acha (Grant)
Pierce of Ohio, in 1873.
In 1880 Thomas and Nancy left Ohio and moved to Knox County, Illinois,
where they resided until 1885, when they came to Barber County, Kansas. He
purchased 160 acres on the Antelope Flats east of Medicine Lodge and farmed
there until he retired and moved to town. He died in 1912. They had eight
children. Grandma Mucphy was lovingly called "Aunt Nan" by all who knew her.
Clifford E. was born in 1877 in Ohio and died in 1963 in Medicine Lodge.
He lived his entire life, from the age of eight years, in and around Medicine
Lodge. He married Pearl Inez Woodward, youngest daughter of Hugh Thompson
and Mary Susan (Hough) Woodward. She was born in Elk County, Kansas, in 1882.
She died in 1958. They were married in 1900 in Medicine Lodge.
I have an older sister, Inez (Murphy) Read, and two brothers, Chester,
who died in infancy, and LeRoy who died in 1967. We were raised in Medicine
Lodge and graduated from Medicine Lodge High School. My sister was my fifth
grade teacher. Other teachers I had, who are still living in Medicine Lodge,
are Estelle Forsyth, Addie Shaw, and Leone Horney.
My mother and father farmed mostly, until he purchased a partnership in
Woodward-Murphy Mercantile Store, which was located north of what is now the
Wester Power Office. Later, he sold his interest in the store and bought the
farm where I was born. In 1915 he traded the farm for the residence at 415
South Walnut St.
Father worked at the Flour Mill, then later was a clerk in Trice's Grocery.
After that, he did carpentry work. My mother was the first Avon lady in
Medicine Lodge, in the 1930's.
While father was in the Mercantile Store, he and mother got many of their
household items as premiums from Bull Durham tabacco sack. I still have their
clock.
I married Bernard Smith, son of Gordan and Vala (Bernard) Smith, in 1929.
We lived on the Smith Ranch for several years in the Depression. We had one
daughter, Carol Joan (Smith)(Shelite) Mackey, now of Anthony, Kansas. She has
three children, Belinda Kay (Shelite) Cleveland, Pamela Dawn Shelite, and
Daniel gordon Mackey. The girl's father, Donald Shelite, was killed in a
tragic train-truck accident in 1959. Carol later married Donald Martin Mackey.
I later married Martin George Rinke, June 29, 1947. Martin had returned
from serving his country in World War II. He is the son of James Frank and
Martha Ellen (Anderson) Rinke. Martin ws born on the family farm near Medicine
Lodge.
We started our own TV and Appliance business in 1954, this being our 25th
year in business.
