Warren Rodgers

On September 29, 1918, at El Dorado, Kansas, the first son of Mr. and
Mrs. F.R. Rodgers was born. A year later, November 10, 1919, at Nash,
Oklahoma, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Howard were proud to announce the birth of
Alice Mae, their third child. Twenty years later, October 5, 1938, these
two were united in marriage at the First Christian Church in Anthony,
Kansas. Reverend Rinehart, a former minister in Medicine Lodge, performed
     the ceremony.
Warren, better known as "Bud," graduated from the Medicine Lodge schools
in 1935. Mae went to school here for the first 10 years, then moved with
her family to Sharon where she graduated in 1937. Bud was a producation
worker for the Barbara Oil Company. In 1941 the family moved to Hutchinson,
where he was a logger and shooter for the Lane Wells Company.
Moving back to Medicine Lodge in 1952, Mae and the children waited 14
months while Bud served in the infantry with the 78th Division, seeing
action in Italy and Belgium, including the Battle of the Bulge. On return
from the service, 1945, we bought and operated the local "Sweet Shop."
After a few years it was sold, and Bud went back into the oil business as
     a roughneck and driller.
Entry back into business came when we bought the DeWeese Grocery in 1959.
The name was changed to Rodgers Grocery and has been our little "Mom and
     Pop" store for 20 years.
We had five childen, all attended the schools in Medicine lodge. A rare
distinction achieved by the children is the fact they were all Boy and
Girl Staters of the American Legion and Auxiliary.
Terry, our oldest son, served three years in the U.S. Army, one year in
Korea. He then earned his Master's Degree from Emporia State Teachers
College, then taught eight years as elementary counselor in the St. John
schools. He now has his own MFA Insurance agency at Garden City. He and
his wife, Sandy, ahve two children, Dick and Cari Sue.
Jerry, second son, received his B.A. Degree from KU and Emporia State
Teachers College, then spent a year at the Bupton Jones Mortuary School at
Dallas, Texas, graduating with second highest honors in his class. He
owned two mortuaries, one at Monte Vista, the other at Del Norte, Colorado.
Jerry and his wife, Judy, had two sons, Chris and Kevin. Jerry's accidental
death from a falling tree occurred March 14, 1979.
Sue VanDolah and Jan Meir, only daughters reside at Dodge City. Both
attended Emporia State College for one year, then married. They are both
employed in Dodge City. Sue has three children, Cinty, Todd, and Brook.
Jan has two children, Angie and Brent.
Randy, youngest son, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Kansas State University,
Manhattan. He received a fellowship to study at University of Wisconsin at
Madison. Receiving his Master's Degree in Wildlife Biology, he is now
employed as research biologist for Kansas Fish and Game Commission at Hays,
     Kansas.
After 40 years of marriage and 20 years of day to day service at the
little store, we spent our 40th wedding anniversary vacationing in Hawaii,
a treat well deserved and completely enjoyed.
We love Barber County and all the people in it. We hope to be down on our
little corner in Medicine Lodge for several more years!
