George M. Roth
My great grandfather, George M. Roth, came to Barber County when he was
16, from Oberinbach, Germany, where he was born. His sister, Barbara, and
her husband, Conrad Baier, had already located here before he came. While
single, he lived in a crude dugout near the Lasswell area.
In 1905 he married Flossie M. Reeves, whose family came from Ohio. She
had been born on Sand Creek in Barber County in 1887. Her family returned
to Ohio in 1892 and in 1900 came back to stay.
George cought three quarters of land at first, and later bought another
quarter. They built a dugout on this land, which was bigger and more secure.
It is still there. Later, George moved a one-room log house made of cedar
from Oklahoma. Several years afterwards they added a bedroom and a kitchen.
There was a good spring just north of the house. He built around it, and it
is still an excellent well. George mostly farmed, and Flossie was a farm
wife and often a midwife. They weren't poor, but they had a good living.
They had two sons, George Fredrick, my grandfather, born in 1905, and
Glenn Edward, born in 1907. Both were born and raised in the Lasswell
community. The boys attended Eagle School, Fred until the 7th grade and Glenn
until the 8th. They remember a male, one-legged school teacher by the name of
Hagerman, a Miss Davis, and a teacher who rode a bicycle from Attica to
Eagle School.
The family attended the Union Chapel Church.
Fred left home when he was 13 to help earn money by hiring himself out to
farmers. Glenn stayed home and helped the folks on their farm. There were
several mortgages on the fam because of illinesses the boys had when they
were little. Fred had appendicitis and had to be taken to Wichita by train;
before they arrived his appendix had burst. Somehow he survived and lived
a very fulfilled life. Glenn had pneumonia and also had to be taken to
Wichita by train, where they put a drain tube in his side for the fluid in
his lungs to drain. He still has a dent where the tube was inserted.
Fred married Vera Iriene Roots, also of Barber County, in 1925. They have
four children, Billy; my father, Jack; Rita Burkhart; and Barbara Banister.
They, too, were born and raised in Barber County.
George M. Roth died in 1937, and Flossie M. Reeves Roth passed on in 1957.
Both are buried at Medicine Lodge.
Glenn married Jennie Smith Conner in 1960. They lived on the old farm until
several years ago. Glenn resides in Medicine Lodge, and Jennie is at the
Kiowa Manor.
Fred and Vera live at Attica; most of their family lives nearby.
