Raymond V. Rozzelle

Raymond V. Rozzelle, son of Eugene and Minnie (Ward) Rossel, was born
7-27-1907 near Wellington, Kansas. Like many pioneers during this era
of change, Raymond V. changed the spelling of his name to Rozzelle.
On 6-27-1882 Raymond V. married Kate Winona Springer, daughter of
William B. and Zula (Vaughn) Springer. Kate was born 1-10-1891 south
of Medicine Lodge. Being a daughter of early Barber County settlers,
Kate's girlhood memories were of prominent events that helped shape
the county's history. Carry Nation was a friend of the Springer family.
Kate recalled Mrs. Nation being in their home several times.
After their marriage, Kate and Raymond Rozzelle built their house
where they lived in rural Gerlane. Raymond V. managed the Larabee Flour
Mill Company elevator for 16 years. He was also Trustee of Nippawalla
Township for several terms. He was clerk of #9 Gerlane school for some
time. He was very proud that he was serving on the board at the time
     the Gerlane school was built.
The family enjoyed doing things together. They attended the community
dances and other social events. Kate and her daughter, Marjorie, enjoyed
playing in the Gerlane orchestra. Kate played the violin, while her
daughter accompanied on the piano. The family liked to attend baseball
games. They also spent many hours together designing and making quilts.
Ray was very handy at wood carving. He also made their first. He also
made their first tube radio. The house which he and Kate built was moved
to town after Ray's death on 12-20-1945. Kate continued to live in the
house, which now stands on South Oak Street in Medicine Lodge.
Kate Rozzelle was a very active woman. She worked in the Barber County
Treasurer's office for several years. She was elected to serve as Barber
County Treasurer in 1948 and served in that capacity until 1952. She was
a member of the Christian Church.
In her later years, Kate remained active. She liked to bowl and enjoyed
the Bowling Alley, which came to Medicine Lodge in her "retirement" years.
County residents recalled how they admired her zest for life. Kate Rozzelle
     passed away 12-10-1962.
Three daughters were born to Raymond V. and Kate Rozzelle; Marjorie (Mrs.
Robert) Simpson; Ruth (Mrs. Melvin) Keoster; and Judith (Mrs. Milton) Gibson.
They had one son, Jack D., who died in a car wreck near Sharon on 5-14-1942.
