Clair Rucker
The Clair Rucker family came from Amorita, Oklahoma to Hazelton in the
summer of 1947 to accept the position as Superintendent of Schools. Clair
was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Rucker, farm people, who migrated from
Iowa to Oklahoma in 1901 and homesteaded there. They had four children: a
daughter, Sylvia, who lives in California; a son, Lowell, who is deceased;
a son, Clair; and a son, Theodore, who is deceased.
Clair was born September 6, 1903, and attended a one room rural school
through the eighth grade. He graduated from the Amorita High School,
received his bachelor's degree from Northwestern State College, and his
master's degree in school administration from Phillips University. He
dedicated his life to working with youth as a teacher, coach, and
administrator for forty-four years. He accepted Christ into his life in
his early teens, holding various offices in the church and has taught
Sunday School classes for sixty years.
In 1923 Clair married Edna May Waters, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alba
Waters, farm people who moved from Illinois to Oklahoma. Four daughters
were born to Clair and Edna.
Nadine graduated from Byron high school, received a Bachelor's degree
from Northwestern State College, and taught school in Oklahoma, Hazelton,
Kiowa, and St. John, Kansas. She married George Cutright of Byron. They
have two sons; David and Donald. They now live at St. John, where they
run a cable television station with the aid of their son, David, and his
wife, Martha. Don is in the Air Force stationed in Germany.
Jean graduated from Hazelton High School, attended college three years,
became a laboratory technician, and worked in hospital clinics until shortly
before her death in August, 1978. Jean married Kenneth Farmer, an Air Force
man. They had five children: Steven, Kathy, Randall, Lori, and Daniel.
Clara graduated from Hazelton High School and attended Business College.
She married Jerry Podschun. They farm and live near Anthony. Jerry also
works as a mechanic at the Williams Motor Co. They have two children, Judy
and Ricky.
Mary graduated from the Pawnee Rock High School, attended college one
year, then took secretarial training and worked ont he Air Force base in
Anchorage, where her sister, Jean, and husband were stationed. Mary met
James Leighton on the Air Force base, and they were married in Anchorage.
They now live in Topeka, where her husband works as an Advertising Artist.
They have one son, Craig.
Mrs. Edna Rucker passed away in 1952 at the Kiowa Hospital. In 1954
Clair married Mrs. Betty Hanna. Clair and Betty moved to Pawnee Rock in
1957, where Clair served as Superintendent of Schools, and Betty worked
in the school library. In 1964 Clair and Betty moved to Ingalls, where
he served as Superintendent of Schools, until their retirement in 1968.
They returned to Hazelton, where they now reside.
