Gary Rucker
On December 24, 1958, Gary Lee Rucker and Emma Joan Magnison were married in
Sharon, Kansas. A simple ceremony in the Christian Church, performed by Reverend
Bill Davis, established a home whose roots go deep into the history of Barber
County. The five children making up our family look back on both paternal and
maternal grandparents even to great-great that had a part in the county's history.
Gary, eldest of three sons of Lee and Ruby (Martin) Rucker, was born 8-26-36
at the farmstead of his grandparents, Nute and Elizabeth (Root) Martin, in the
Forest City community. In 1942 the family moved to what would be their home place
north and west of Sharon. Gary grew to manhood, graduating from Sharon schools
in 1954.
I was born 3-9-38 at Alva, Oklahoma, the second of five children of John and
Faye (Woods) Magnison. I grew up southwest of Medicine Lodge in Union Chapel
community. Attending Dry Creek school, Medicine Lodge High, and obtaining a
sixty-hour certificate through Pratt Juco, I was teaching my first and only year
at Walstead school, when we met in 1958.
Early married life saw many moves, all within Barber County. From an apartment
in Medicine Lodge, to a trailer on Gary's home place, to
Sharon for almost 3 years, then the McClure ranch south of Medicine Lodge from
April until October of 1963.
During this time our family grew also. Flint Anthony was born 12-9-1959. He
was joined by Link Bradley 1-23-61. They welcomed a sister, Jodi Lee, on 3-2-62.
October, 1963, we moved 3 miles north of Medicine Lodge to a farm. August,
1965, Gary's father purchased the farm, and we continue to make our home here.
Nute Patrick was born 1-7-1966. Our four oldest children were all born at
Nashville in Kingman county. Our youngest, a daughter, Kelli Rae, was born 8-25-70
at Medicine Lodge.
All our children attended or are attending Medicine Lodge schools. Flint and
Link graduated in 1978. Jodi graduated in 1979. Nute is a sixth grader and Kelli a
second grader. We are all members of the Baptist Church.
Our family has enjoyed farming and a family custom harvest operation. Gary
supplements our income with oilfield work from time to time. Our boys have enjoyed
helping neighbors with farm and ranch work as they grew up. Jodi works at the
Pizza Hut.
On October 8, 1978, heaven became very precious as Link Bradley entered there
from a wreck on the Ridge Road.
As we look back on Barber County history, we see joy and sorrow touching the
lives of those who have written its pages. We feel we are a privileged family
whose roots in the past have brought joy and comfort. With anticipation we look
forward to the history yet to be written in the lives of our children and future
generations.
Grandson Bradly Link was born 1-28-80, Medicine Lodge.
