Lee Rucker
Lee Rucker was born 8 miles southeast of Medicine Lodge, 2-12-14, to
Ray and Myrtle (McDaniel) Rucker. He went to school at College Hill. His
favorite teacher was Mrs. George Horney.
Lee enjoyed hunting in the winter. This gave him spending money. He
liked to fish in the summer. He started helping his father with field
work when he was 7 years old, driving four horses.
In the year 1934 Lee moved with his parents, brother Cloyce, and sister,
Eve (Arndt), to Amsterdam, Missouri. In Januiary, 1935, he came back to
Barber County. He worked and stayed at his Uncle Wilbur McDaniel's home
until July 10, 1935. On that date he and Ruby Martin were married at
Anthony, Kansas.
Youngest child and only daughter of Nute and Elizabeth (Root) Martin, I
was born 3-1-16. I had a happy life growing up in a home with six brothers
and living in a closely knit community at Forest City. I remember picnics
that lasted for several days. Once we went to the Salt Plain and Bat Caves
in Oklahoma. Two trucks were loaded with camping equipment and people. One
rainy night my father, Nute Martin, and Joe Gant stayed up all night and
cooked ham and beans. It rained, but they kept the fire going and the beans
cooking. The meals were delicious; ham and beans, scrambled eggs, fried
potatoes, etc.
I attended the Forest City school. I had three great teachers: Kittie
Scmidl, Pearl Vernon, and Freda Nurse. I attended high school in Medicine
Lodge.
In the fall of 1935 we went to Amsterdam, Missouri, to make our home. We
lived on the Kansas side of the road; across the road was Missouri. July,
1936, we moved back to Barber County. Our son, Gary Lee, was born 8-26-36,
in the same house where I was born twenty years before. October 14, 1939,
Donald Raymond was born. In 1942 we bought our home where we now live. It
is 6 miles from Medicine Lodge and 4 from Sharon. David Martin was born
4-16-48. The boys grew up in the Sharon community, attending the Sharon
school and Christian church. Lee was on the school board from 1948-1954.
Lee works at the Medicine Lodge sale barn, starting in 1937 and still
working. He drove a truck for Paul Sears several years.
December 24, 1958, Gary and Emmajo Magnison were married at the Christian
Church in Sharon. They had five children: Flint, Link, Jodi, Nute, and
Kelli. They attended the Medicine Lodge schools. Our beloved grandson, Link,
was killed in a pickup wreck in 1978.
Don and Barbara Rose of Alva, Oklahoma were married May 30, 1959, at the
Methodist Church in Alva. They have four children: Mark, Linda, Donna, and
Mike. They attend the Sharon Schools.
November 22, 1966, David and Mary Simpson were married at the Christian
church in Medicine Lodge. They have two sons: Ronald and Dustin. They go
to the Sharon Schools.
