Georgie Hull Russell
Georgie was born March 14, 1936, in the family home twelve miles south of
Lake City, Kansas. Georgie is the second of five children of Raymond and
Thelma (Colborn) Hull. The three older children, Mary, Georgie, and Dallas,
were close in age and had happy times around the checker table, listening to
the radio. Family picnic outings to the tree-surrounded creek were always a
treat. Many times we children took Mother's fresh hot bread and spent several
hours in the shade of the cottonwood and cedar trees.
We attended school at Julian District #24, five miles south of our home.
The rural one-room school was great when we could get a teacher. We rode a
pet horse to school, and when he wasn't too tired we also rode him home! Many
times we walked home when Snake Eyes left early! Dad was very tolerant of the
escapades we seemed to get involved in with that old horse, for it was his
pet as well. A few school mates in our district were Marge and Sonny Reed,
Donnie and Glenn Brown, along with Mary, Georgie and Dallas Hull. Some of my
teachers were native Barber county ladies; Lena Swafford, Loy Hull, Thelma
Balmer, Esther Colborn, and Mary Helen McIntire all shared in educating this
Hull child through grade school.
Several years we moved to Medicine Lodge for the school term when no
teacher took our school. We were fortunate in having a small house in Medicine
Lodge in which to live. Georgie, like her brothers and sisters, graduated from
Medicine Lodge High School. Upon graduation Georgie went to work at South-
Western Bell Telephone Company in 1954.
In the fall of 1955 Georgie was introduced to several other people who
worked nights in towns around Medicine Lodge. Wendell (Pete) Russell was a
night policeman in Harper, Kansas. Pete and Georgie had so much in common with
both working nights and were drawn together. In 1956 they wer married in the
family church in Medicine Lodge. They have lived in Harper, Kansas, all their
married lives. The Russells have one child, Steven Alan, born June 19, 1961.
Steven is a senior at Chaparral High School; he plans to attend North Central
Kansas Vo-Tech School next year.
Georgie is continuing her career with the telephone company. She commutes
daily to Wichita, Kansas, where she is working in line and number assignment;
the Network Administration Department is a challenge with its electronic
equipment. Georgie plans to continue with the telephone company until retirement
age.
