John Kenneth Russell
John Kenneth Russell and wife, the former Prudence Josephone Brown, moved
from Duquoin, Kansas, in 1917 to the Dr. W.G. Muir farm on the Ridge.
Their son Curtis Royal was drafted in the first World War and died in
France. Archie Chalmers was drafted, but the Armistice was signed the day
before he was to report for duty. Kenneth David, the eldest son, remained at
home and continued with the farm work. There were three daughters; Lucille
Esther who attended and graduated from Spivey High School in 1921; Thelma
Vivian and Sarah Margaret both attended Unity Rural School in Barber County
and later to high schools in other areas. I, Sarah, was about five years old
at the time we moved to the Ridge Community.
My father farmed a considerable acreage, considering farming at that time
was done by horses and mules and later on with a tractor. I remember we did
our harvesting by binder and by header pulled by horses and mules. The wheat
was stacked and threshing machines came later in the summer and fall,
accompanied by a cookshack with a cook to feed the threshing crew. Later my
father had a combine to harvest his wheat and of course less men to hire and
to feed, as the family usually could handle the work themselves.
My sister, Thelma, attended Unity School from the third grade through the
eighth. I started to Unity School in 1920. Some of the teachers were Clara
Luthy, Mrs. Grimes, Audrey Clawson, and Mr. Shehan.
The school was the center of many 'get-togethers.' Sunday School and Church
were held there as well as many school programs, box-suppers, literaries, and
a man's Anti-Horse Thief Association.
I moved with my parents to Harper, Kansas in 1927.
