Bob Rutan
The youngest of three children of Jay B. Rutan and Clara M. Bunting
Rutan, I was born November 11, 1925, in Pratt, Kansas, and given the
name Bobby Gene.
Dad was born in Carrollton, Missouri, and grandfather Oliver Rutan
was born in Prosperity, Pennsylvania.
My sisters are Betty Frisbie, Medicine Lodge, and Margaret Vaughn,
San Gabriel, California.
Fourteen years old when our family moved to Medicine Lodge, I attended
four years of high school here and graduated in 1944; spent the next
twenty-six months with the U.S. Navy in World War II; and was discharged
July, 1946.
For two years, I worked as a temporary mail carrier and at other odd
jobs. In 1948 I began working as a self-employed carpenter.
In 1953 Lester Shaw and I began working together and formed Shaw and
Rutan Construction Company. We continued this partnership for twenty-three
years, until 1976. Lester Shaw retired, and I purchesed his interest in
the partnership. The business is now operated as Rutan Construction Company
with a warehouse and office at 217 West Stolp.
Both my Grandfather Rutan and Grandfather Bunting were carpenters in
Stafford County.
Margaret Jane Colborn was born September 7, 1935, daughter of William H.
and Margaret Bayliffe Colborn.
We were married October 5, 1956, and began our married life in a new home
at 500 North Oak. Our home is now at 315 ElDorado Avenue.
Our children are Teresa Gay, born August 30, 1957; Michele Dawn, April
17, 1962; and Michael Jay, February 1, 1966. Teresa married Michael L.
Farrar, September 14, 1978.
