John and Nellie Sandy
My brother, Elbert and myself, Gladys Sandy, the two youngest children
of John and Nellie (Smart) Sandy, have come up with the following.
Our parents and the two oldest boys, Oscar and Merle, came to Barber
County in 1899. Elbert and I were born at Sharon and Dr. Van Fossen was
our doctor. The boys attended rural grade school; then in about 1912 we
moved to town.
Since father could speak Spanish, he went to work for the Santa Fe
Railroad as foreman of a crew of Mexicans. They laid the heavy steel
from Attica to Belvidere.
Our mother worked for Mrs. Monte Hoyt as a dressmaker and milliner.
The youngest Hoyt son, Arthur, and I gave our mothers trouble, as we
wanted to run the machine treadles by hand.
Our oldest brother, Oscar, married Clara Kiefer of Attica, and Merle
married Maude Eggleston of Sharon. Maude's parents operated the hotel
and a grocery and meat market.
After Elbert's stint of three years in the Army, he went to Barber
College in Wichita. After completing barber school, he came back to
Sharon and worked for Shorty Gangler. He married Inez Coffman. They
later moved to Hazelton.
Gladys married Elmer Ward of Kiowa, and they both attended Northwestern
State Teachers College in Alva, Oklahoma. We graduated in 1933, then
spent most of our time teaching school until our retirment in 1970.
Our grandfather, F.M. Smart, owned a farm south of Sharon until they
moved to Sharon in about 1916 or 1917. Our grandfather was a Civil War
Veteran and walked very erect. Mrs. Frank McReynolds used to call him
"old ram rod Smartses." This was Toss and Chancey's mother.
Of our family only Elbert and I are left. We both live in Moline, Kansas.
