Fred W. Schupbach
Fred W. Schubach was born in Burlington, Kansas, on December 25, 1895.
He moved to Burlington, Oklahoma, at the age of 6 1/2. He played baseball
with the Burlington town team in 1914. In 1917 he was inducted into the
Army at Fort Riley, later transferred to Camp Custer, Michigan, with the
Ambulance Service for 18 months.
In 1923 hemarried Marjorie Waite and lived in Burlington, Oklahoma. In
1927 he went into the John Deere business with his brother, John, and
niece, Ann Schupbach Hart, in Kiowa. He sold his interest in 1940. He
and his family moved to Alva, Oklahoma, then to Pond Creek, Oklahoma. In
1942 they moved to Wichita, where Fred worked for Cessna Aircraft. In
1945 they moved back to Kiowa, where Fred bought the Hardison Plumbing
Shop. He later bought the Luther Circle Building where his Plumbing Shop
is now located.
Fred has the distinctionof having one of the cleanest stores of this
kind anywhere, and at this writing, 1979, he is the eldest merchant in
business in Kiowa.
They have two daughters, Georgianna and Helen. Georgianna married
Richard McMillan (now deceased), and they had three children, Douglas,
Fred, and Diana.
Douglas graduated from Fort Hays College in Agriculture: he and his
wife, Jeanne, have two sons, Ryan Huntera nd Joshua Arron. They live
in Wichita.
Diana graduated from Fort Hays College in Education. She and her
husband, Bill Bowles, and daughter, Tiffany, live in Wichita.
Helen married Sam Stranathan, and they have four children, Todd, who
is in the Navy, Carrie Matthew, and Thane live with their parents in
Meeker, Colorado.
