John Schupbach

My parents, John and Sarah Somerholder Schupbach, were married in
Burlington, Kansas. In January, 1905, they moved to a farm in Coffey
County, Kansas. They lived there for five years, and Fredrick, Elizabeth,
Laurence, and I, Anna, were born there. In 1910 they moved to an 80 acre
farm 3 miles east of Burlington, Oklahoma, moving their household goods
and livestock in a railroad car. My sisters, Lois and Marie, and my
     brother, Edwin, were born there.
The folks sold this farm in 1914 and bought 160 acres 1 mile east and
3 1/2 miles north of Burlington, later buying 2 more quarters in the
same section. They built a house and barn here, and this is where my
sisters, Opal, Jean, and Syliva, and brothers, Reuben and Harry, were
     born.
       Father operated a threshing machine doing custom work in the summers;
and the balance of the year, he bought and shipped livestock.
In 1925 he and Henry Bunker purchawed an implement store from James L.
Vance in Kiowa, Kansas. It was located near the Missouri-Pacific Railroad.
They sold Hart-Parr tractors, John Deere and B.F. Avery implements.
Later, father bought out Mr. Bunker and in 1927 he formed a partnership
with his brother, F.W. Schupbach, J.W. Hazelton, and myself. We built a
brick and tile store at 116 So. 7th in Kiowa, and had contracts with John
Deere, J.I. Case, B.F. Avery Plow Co., and Emerson-Braningham Implement
     Company.
In 1930 Mr. Hazelton sold his interest in the store to father and in
1940, F.W. Schupbach sold his part. I married Gene Hart in 1931 and he
came into the firm, too. We remained partners in the business until 1969,
when the store was sold to Laurence and Henry Schupbach.
In 1945 father and mother purchased the Noll Ranch east of Kiowa, which
my brother, Harry, and his wife Trulla (Ruggs) have been operating. In
March, 1979, they purchased the ranch.
My parents moved from the farm in Oklahoma to Kiowa in 1946, having
bought the Ewell home at 315 South 7th where they lived the balance of
their lives. Mother died March 16, 1964, at the age of 79 years, 11 months.
And father died, February 28, 1973, at the age of 92 years and 11 months.
They are both buried in the Riverview Cemetery, Kiowa, Kansas.
