Scripsick-Wing
"Can't you put it off 'till morning?" My father asked my mother as she
prepared for the birth of her second child. May Belle Richardson Scripsick,
the first daughter of William and Sarah Atteberry Richardson was born and
raised in Aetna, Kansas, a flourishing town of 200 people.
In 1884, my grandfather staked a claim northwest of Aetna and later
operated a general store for nearly forty years. He moved to Lake City
in 1925.
My mother and father were married in 1907, and lived on a ranch near
Aetna in Comanche County. Joseph Valentine Scripsick was born in Spivey,
Kansas in 1886. He moved with his family to a claim in the Cherokee Strip
southwest of Kiowa, Kansas. His parents were Michael and Frances Scripsick.
Both were immigrants to this country from Germany and Poland. My father
was ninty-three this Valentine's Day, still alert and enjoying visits with
his family.
To this union nince children were born: Arthur Richard, Mary Christina
Wing, Haold Albert, deceased, Frances Sarah Domann, Robert Quinten, Betty
Jo Wear, Kenneth Koe, Martin, deceased, and Marjorie May Shuster.
I had a very happy childhood. I played with and loved "live" dolls, and
was a tomboy with my brothers and sisters in the little towns in which we
lived. I graduated from Kiowa High School and attended three and half years
of college in Alva, Oklahoma during the Depression. It was hard to believe
that I lived on six dollars a week. But my father was a farmer so there was
always plenty of food.
I met Roy while working in Beal's Drug Store in Kiowa. We were married
August 14, 1932. Roy Alonzo Wing was born November 11, 1906, Byron, Oklahoma.
He was the son of Jira Wiolder and Maude Fowler Wing. 'Jerry,' as he was
known, was the agent for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Roy has one brother,
J. Clyde who resides in Eureka, Kansas with his wife, May. Roy started working
in the First National Bank of Kiowa after graduation from high school, and
was in the banking business for most of his life. We have one son, James
Clyde, born October 2, 1940. Jim graduated from Kansas State University and
is a Project Engineer with Searle Company, Los Altos, California. He and his
wife have two children. David James who is the only Wing descendant to carry
on the name, and Laura Elizabeth.
I returned to Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 1965 and received
a B.A. Degree in Library Science. I was associated with Southeast High School,
Wichita, Kansas for three years. Roy passed away in 1970. After thirty-eight
years of marriage. I remember the 'Bank Holiday', the Dust Bowl days and the
Depression. So many events. But most of all, I remember the wonderful friends
we have known and the close family relationships. I moved to Medicine Lodge
in 1972. I am now the City Librarian. I have many hobbies of which Art is the
most important. Wheat and landscapes are my favorite subjects.
