Arthur Dillman Shaw

My grandfather, Arthur D. Shaw, arrived in Medicine Lodge, June 4, 1884.
He became active in real estate, mostly town lots; soon managed the Geppert-
Stone Lumber Company; furnished all material for Grand Hotel, W.W. Cook
Block, and County Court House; sold to Badger Lumber Company. All this time
he was farming land south of town. He began branching off into the cattle
and ranching business, buying 12,000 acres of the Comanche Pool land on
Mule Creek. He continued in farming and ranching for many years, retiring
     in 1941.
A.D. was a pioneer in bringing oil and gas business to Barber County, one
of the founders of Barber County Building and Loan, Mayor, and active in
the Methodist Church. He married Jessie Simmons, daughter of P.A. Simmons,
who helped reorganize the Bank after the robbery. They had two children,
     Frances and Dillman.
Frances married W.J. Coppinger, who was instrumental in opening the first
     oil field in Barber County.
Dillman was in ranching and farming business with his father. A World War
I veteran, he served in France. Later years he was an oil lease broker and
well promoter. He was civic minded - and served on City Council, Secretary
of Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of Cowboy Episode of Peace Treaty Pageant
for many years, American Legion Commander, helped promote Stockade, on
Building Committee of Methodist Church, member of Masonic Lodge and Wichita
     Consistory.
My father, Dillman Shaw, married Addie Long, daughter of Jeff Long. They
had two children, Geraldine and Josephine. My sister, Gerry, married A.C.
Johnson, Jr., veteran of WWII, Pensacola, Florida. They have two children,
Arthur C., III and Dillman Shaw.
I married Rovert C. Gilmore, veteran First Marine Division, WWII, a native
son, coming to Medicine Lodge in 1927. Both Bob and I attended Medicine
Lodge grade school and graduated from Medicine Lodge High School. Bob was
active in all sports. He was associated with Palmer Abstract and insurance
and is now owner of the business. He is active in the community, served as
Secretary of Library Board, and spent 27 consecutive years as Secretary
of Delta Lodge #77, AF&AM and Royal Arch Chapter, is a member of Wichita
Consistory and Midian Shrine, Secretary of Golf Club, and active in Peace
     Treaty Celebration.
We have two children, Debra Jo and Michael Robert, both graduates of
     Medicine Lodge High School.
We are proud that our heritage goes back to pioneer families and that
our families chose to make their homes in Barber County.
