Paul Shelite
I was born in Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital on June 8, 1956, the
third daughter of Jim and Beulah (Mills) Harbaugh. I grew up on a farm
25 miles southwest of Medicine Lodge.
I especially remember going with Dad to feed when sisters, Brenda and
Debra, were in school and Mom was at home taking care of little brother,
Casey. I sat on my knees in the seat and quided the pickup, while Dad
threw hay off to the cattle.
My first grade teacher at Julian school, 1 1/2 miles north of our
house, was Mrs. Grace White. My sisters and I walked to school when it
was nice, taking a sack lunch or soup to heat at school. There were only
six children in school that year. As many other country schools were
closed, ours did, too. In 1963, at the end of my First Grade year.
I then attended Hardtner PUblic School and was active in Pep Club, band,
music, track, and basketball. In October, 1968, I joined the International
Order of Rainbow at Kiowa and was a very active member for six years. Then I
received majority.
I spent my senior year at MLHS, graduating in 1974. During the summer
months of high school, I helped my parents with harvest. I attended Ft.
Hays State for one year, then worked in Hays for 1 1/2 years. I moved to
Pratt and worked for six months for Dr. Dave Johnston as a Dental Assistant.
I also worked as a part-time truck driver for Paul Shelite.
Paul was born on April 7, 1955, at Hardtner, the only son and third child
of Rea L. and Phyllis (Simpson) Shelite. He has lived in Medicine Lodge all
his life, active in Boy Schouts from ages 8 to 16 and active in basketball,
football, track, band, and music in junior high through high school. During
his junior year at MLHS, he was chosen for Show Choir. Paul attended Dodge
City Community College on a basketball scholarship, and during his sophomore
year was chosen to appear in Who's Who in American Jr. Colleges. He graduated
in 1976 with an Associate of Applied Science degree.
For a while Paul did custom cutting around Pratt, when he hired me as a
driver. He started to work for Tom Bedwell in November, 1976, as a ranch
hand. He also helps at Medicine Lodge Sales Co. on Fridays.
We now live on the Bedwell ranch, 5 miles west of Medicine Lodge (in the
old Wright house, as people know it). I work for Ivol Howard at Howard's
Food Store.
