Arza Wilson Shriver
Arza Wilson, son of Abram and Elizabeth (Wilson) Shriver, was born 15
February 1868, Greene County, Pennsylvania; died 5 March 1939 near Lake
City, Kansas.
Married 12 March 1896, LaHarpe, Illinois, to Ruby Sarah Coulson, born
20 November 1876, LaCrosse, Illinois; died 21 August 1969, Harper, Kansas;
daughter of Edwin Crandall and Harriet Fidella (Gilliland) Coulson.
Arza Shriver, with his family moved from Kingman County to Barber County,
Kansas, in 1915. He brought with him 40 registered Percheron brood mares,
7 stallions, and 2 jacks. During this time, there was a period of time
when they sold registered suckling colts for $300 each. For several years
they lived in the Medicine Lodge area; in the Riverside community; on to
the Marion Crouse farm; then to the Alexander Ranch and to the Sadie Clay
place in northern Barber County before moving to the Johnson place at Lake
City in 1922.
After the death of Arza Shriver in 1939, his wife Ruby, aged 63 years,
moved into Medicine Lodge.
Arza Shriver was of German ancestry, a Protestant, Democrat, stockman,
and farmer. Ruby was of English and Scotch-Irish ancestry, and was, before
her marriage, a teacher in Hancock County, Illinois. She was an excellent
homemaker and accounted to the last penny from the time of their marriage
until her death at 93.
To this union was born: Herschel Arza; William Coulson; and Oliver W.
They also raised a niece, Ruby Hatfield.
Burials of the Shriver Family have been in Highland Cemetery, Medicine
Lodge, Kansas.
