Herschel A. Shriver
Herschel Arza Shriver was born 7 December 1896, Raritan, Illinois; died
26 June 1971, Pratt, Kansas; married 24 July 1918, Medicine Lodge, Kansas
to Cuba Edna Strickland, born 9 August 1898, Medicine Lodge, Kansas; died
9 Septembe 1953 near Harper, Kansas; daughter of Henry Lee and Edna
Elizabeth (Cole) Strickland.
Herschel married second 16 September 1961, Pratt, Kansas, to Lydia
(Swafford) Cox, who survived him.
Children born to Herschel Shriver and Cuba Edna Strickland Shriver were:
Irene Esther and Glenn LeRoy and Vade Eldon (who died in infancy).
Herschel attended high school in Medicine Lodge, served in WWI, and was
an active citizen in his community, serving on the School Board of District
21, Forest City Church Board, Barber County Farm Bureau Board, Extension
Farm Management Board, and was one of the adult leaders in developing the
first 4-H Club in Barber County, the Mongona Boosters.
Cuba Edna Strickland Shriver was an active community worker and served
on many church, County Extension, wormen's organizations. Herschel and
Cuba were remembered by many for their fine vocal duets, singing for many
public functions. They were members of the Christian Church of Medicine
Lodge; however attended regularly the Forest City All Union Church. Herschel
and Cuba first farmed on the Sadie Clay place, the Matthews place near Forest
City, the johnson place near Lake City, until they purchased their own place
near Rago, Kansas. Before they moved into their new home, Cuba was killed in
a single car accident near their new home. Herschel lived in this home
with his mother, Ruby, until he was married to Lydia Swafford Cox in 1961,
where they lived until Herschel's death, at which time Lydia moved to Pratt,
Kansas.
Cuba Edna Strickland Shriver was involved in all aspects of a farm worman's
life. It was because of her participation in the Associated Country Women
of the World that her signature appears on the United Nations Charter.
