Oliver W. Shriver
Oliver W. Shriver was born 26 December 1903, Clearwater, Kansas; married
27 June, 1936, Garden City, Kansas, to Hazel Adaline Steenis, born 21
September 1907, Lyon County, Kansas; daughter of John J. and Edith (Bower)
Steenis of Deerfield, Kansas. No children.
Oliver started farming working with his father on the Johnson Place near
Lake City, Kansas. In the late 1920s, he started farming for himself near
Deerfield and Moscow, Kansas, and ws one of the early Western Kansas
wheat growers. He later acquired land for himself in Kearney County and he
and his wife Hazel developed one of the fine irrigated farms in Kearney
County, first raising wheat and milo, and later corn and irrigated grass
for livestock.
Hazel was first a bookkeeper for the Metz Lumber Company in Wichita, and
served as an excellent housewife, gardener, community worker, in the
Deerfield area. Their love for children was expressed in their work with
4-H children in their community.
They retired from farming after 50 years and now reside at Parker, Arizona.
