Oliver Singer

Elizabeth Hankey moved to Medicine Lodge with her parents, Chester and
Lizzie Hankey, in 1927 and started to Medicine Lodge High School as a
     freshman in 1928.
Bertha Singer soon became a close girl friend and was later to become
her sister-in-law. Both were sophomores in that 1928-29 term; however.
this was to be only one semester for Elizabeth, for she had met Oliver
Singer in July 1928, when she went to Bertha to the Louthan farm during
     wheat harvest.
Oliver and Elizabeth were married in Pratt, Kansas, on January 26, 1929,
and moved to a farm on "The Ridge" where the Guy Aubleys now live. In
August 1929, they moved to the Singer farm two miles south of the Ridge
Road where they lived for 31 years, raising a family of three children:
     Ellen, Anita and Jerry.
Farming, raising cattle and many turkeys, dodging spring tornadoes and
weathering summer storms and winter blizzards kept the family busy during
the children's youth; all three attended school at Mumford country school.
Oliver became involved in custom wheat cutting, which usually ended in
North Dakota. This was a fun time for Elizabeth and the children; to tag
     along was a vacation trip.
In the fall of 1950, Oliver went to work at Boeing in Wichita during the
     winter months. Allergies had forced him to get out of the cattle business;
so, after the wheat was planted, the family settled in Southeast Wichita.
Farming in the summer and working at Boeing in the winter became our way
of life for the next five or six years.
Ellen attended school in Medicine lOdge; but, after she contracted polio
and wasn't able to climb the steps at Wichita East High School or return
to Medicine Lodge High School, she graduated from derby, Kansas, High
School. Ellen is now Mrs. Loren Pyle, living in Scottsdale, Arizona, and
employed by Motorola in the accounting department. She has four children
     and two grandchildren.
Anita graduated from Wichita East High School and married Jerry Isbell
in 1958; he was also a student at East High. Moving to California in 1964,
Anita later graduated from University of California Fullerton, with a
degree in nursing. Anita, Jerry and their two children make their home in
     Brea, California.
Jerry Singer attended Wichita East High School but returned to Medicine
Lodge for his senior year and graduated in 1960. Jerry met Barbara Mattingly
that year; she was also a senior. They were married in November, 1960.
They moved to California when Oliver and Elizabeth sold their farm and
moved to Anaheim, California, where Oliver was employed by North American
for ten years. Barbara also graduated from University of California,
Fullerton, with a degree in nursing. Jerry owns a garage and is in auto-
motive repair business; Barbara is employed as a clinical nurse for Pacific
Telephone Company. They and their two children live in Orange, California.
Oliver and Elizabeth had acquired eight grandchildren and one great
granddaughter before Oliver passed away in April, 1977. Since then a great
grandson has been added to the family.
