Fred G. Sitler
Fred G. Sitler married Allie L. Hankerson in 1896 in Axtell, Kansas. They
were farmers for a number of years before coming to Lake City, Kansas.
I was nine years old hwne we moved to Lake City, coming from Goldwater,
Kansas. Our father and Joe Scripsick had the elevator in Lake City, later
they dissolved the partnership. I remember being in the elevator and the
ice house; at that time they froze the ice there. Later it was shipped in
and stored to be delivered over town. There was a barn and corral and a
large tank the size in diameter as a silo. We kids would swim in it some-
times. One time I remember the tank was used for baptisms and those that
were baptized went to our house to change clothes.
One time I was watching a wagon of wheat starting to be dumped. The wagon
was beginning to raise up when the mules saw a bull snake and they took off.
It was real exciting for awhile.
Our parents were interested in the church, school and the city. We went
to the Methodist Church.
We played games, had parties and enjoyed having company. In the winter we
would skate on the river. Sometimes we'd have a bon fire and roast marshmallows
and sing, then walk back to town. We all had chores to do after school. We
would clean lamp globes, bring in coal and gather the eggs.
Four of us children graduated from Lake City High School.
I married Guy S. Cooke in 1935. We lived in Lake City where Guy ran a shop
for awhile, then took a job with the county road maintenance. We moved to
Hill City, Kansas. Guy worked for Dan Lake, making farm ponds. He got allergic
to the greases and gas and had to quit. We came to Medicine Lodge in 1956. Guy
worked for the South Central Telephone Association.
We have enjoyed living in Medicine Lodge, our children graduated from high
school here. They are Connie Lou and Ron. I have five grandchildren. Guy died
in 1974.
