Frank Smith

My father, Fank Sanford Smith, son of William H. and Mary Ellen (James)
Smith, was born Jan. 2, 1873, on a farm near Sedgwick, Kansas. His parents,
with their 6 older children, came to Kansas in 1871 from Delaware. In 1877
they moved to Elwood Township, 14 miles southwest of Medicine Lodge, having
filed a homestead, where my father grew to manhood.
He attended grade school, but was more interested in playing the 'fiddle'
and riding horses. He was one of the "Old time" cowboys, working for his
  father and various cattle companies.
He married Laura Ludwig and to this union were born Glenn, Gayle (Buck),
and Hiel T. (Mick). Some years after Laura's death, he married Adah T.
Humphrey, dauther of Fred and Janet (Shaw) Humphrey. Fred, whose real name
was Thomas, born at Welshpool, Wales, Oct. #, 1856, came with his parents to
the United States when he was 11 years old. Fred married Janet Shaw, born
May 21, 1854 at Medina, New York. She had migrated with her parents to the
US from Scotland by way of Canada.
My mother and her brother, Fredrick Paul, were born June 24, 1890, the
first twins in the 'new town' Kiowa. The family later moved to the home 12
miles northwest of Kiowa, where she grew to womanhood. She loved school,
finishing the grades and 1 year at Kiowa High School, where she was an
excellent student. Then, after attending Normal School, she taught 1 year
at Canema, near Grandfather Smith's Ranch, and 1 year at Hazelton.
After her marriage, her great love was for her husband and her family
and all their accomplishments. To this union were born: Elsie, Sanford,
Wilbur, Margaret, Frank Jr., Thaine, Robert and Edwin.
We lived in Clark and Ford Counties, moving in 1920 to a farm near Nevada,
Missouri. In 1925, we moved back to Barber County, in the Lake City and Aetna
communities. In 1932, we moved to the farm 10 miles northwest of Kiowa. In
1953, they retired to Kiowa, until their deaths. Dad on Feb. 25, 1965, and
mother on Jan. 24, 1967. Both are buried in the Kiowa Cemetery.
Times were hard as we grew up, and we made 'do' with what was available,
living off the land, gardening, canning, raising chickens and hogs, as well
as cattle for meat, milk, etc. We picked 'greens' for salads and wild sand
plums for butter. And used cowchips for fuel.
We made our own recreation, playing games, listening to Dad play the
violin. Gayle the organ and singing the old songs. We loved to listen to Dad's
experiences on the range, hauling salt from the Salt Plains and other stories
of Indians. Mother telling of her childhood, staying with her Aunt Margie on
her claim in Oklahoma south of Kiowa. We had ice cream suppers with the
neighbors; school and church socials, box suppers and neighborhood dances.
Our mother insisted, and sacrificed, that we children finish high school,
as we eight younger ones did. Thaine graduated from the Kansas School for the
Deaf at Olathe, the rest from Kiowa High. Since we lived to far to drive, we
older children had to work to pay for our board and room in town while
  attending school.
I married Sept. 4, 1932, to Willard Dial of Hardtner. Our 3 children,
Michael, his wife Deanna and daughter Ashley and son Michael reside near
Rogers, Arkansas; Michael's daughter, Michelle, lives with her mother, Judy
Dial in Amarillo, Texas. Pat Alan, his wife, Marcia and sons Christopher and
Jason live near Reeds Spring, Missouri. Dana, her husband, Victor Osborn and
their daughters, Courtney and Lesley reside in Anthony, Kansas.
I live in Wichita and Willard is at Bentonville, Arkansas.
