Thomas Howard Smith
Dorothy Lee Chapin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Chapin, and Lt. Thomas
Howard Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.R. Smith, were united in marriage at
the home of the bride's mother, January 6, 1946.
Tom and Dorothy were born and raised in Medicine Lodge and attended its
public schools; both were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Dorothy continued her education at the University of Kansas where she
was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and later became a United
States Cadet Nurse, training at the Bell Memorial Hospital in Kansas City,
Kansas.
After working a short time for Ethyl Corporation in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Tom
joined the Navy Air Corps in 1942. He served as a Navy pilot aboard the
USS Carrier Anzio, he participated in the invasion of Okinawa, later
joining the Third Fleet. Tom returned with an air medal with three clusters
and a Presidential Unit Citation.
After their marriage Tom attended the University of Oklahoma majoring
in business administration. During this time, two sons were born - Thomas
Chapin Smith arrived March 16, 1947 and Robert Gordon Smith was born August
26, 1948. A third son, Ted Willis Smith, was born in Medicine Lodge, May
15, 1956.
Tom accepted a job with National Gypsum Company in Medicine lodge in January
1951, where he has worked the past 28 years. Many old friends returned to
Barber County to make their home after the war and many new friends were
acquired through associations in church, school and community activities.
Tom served on the City Council six years; one of his most rewarding projects
was beautification of the city park through the cooperation of its caretaker,
George Hogan. He also was instrumental in moving the Smith Family log cabin
into the Stockade in 1961; it is there today as a reminder of the typical
domicile of many early Barber County pioneers.
A pleasure of Tom and Dorothy was being active members and officers in
several community organizations: Blue Lodge, Barber County Shrine, United
Methodist Church Deparartment of Education, Lions Club, Peace Treaty
Association, PTA, Mothers Club and PEO. Perhaps greatest enjoyment was
acquired through leadership and participation in their three sons' activities -
summer baseball, scouting, camping and swimming programs, and also school-
sponsered music and athletic programs.
Many were the attractions in the San Francisco area of California, where
Tom was transferred in 1963; but the ties of home were very strong and,
after two years, the family was happy to return to the familiar hills and
open country of Barber County. Most of all they missed the small town
atmosphere and the friendly faces of family and friends.
Tom, the oldest son, attended Southwestern College, Winfield, where he
graduated in 1970. A member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity, he participated
in their athletic program and other intra-fraternal activities. He served
six years in the Army Resuerve program, taking his basic training at Fort
Ord, California. He married Nancy Grothusen of Ellsworth, June 6, 1970.
They now reside with their two children, Bryan and Keri, in Shawnee Mission,
Kansas. Tom is President of Gold Crown Properties, Inc.
Bob also attended Southwestern College and Kansas State University,
graduating in 1971 with a major in business administration. He was also a
member of Delta Upsilon, K-State Men's Glee Club and the Acapella Choir at
Southwestern. He is presently Sales Representative for Masonite Corporation
in the Wichita District. Bob and his wife, the former Glenda Cox of Medicine
Lodge, with their children, Stacy and Scott, live in Clearwater, Kansas.
Ted attended the University of Kansas, also majoring in business administration.
He, too, is a member of Delta Upsilon, also participating in intra-mural
athletics and the musical Rock Chalk Reviews. He married Trilby Mandacina
of Lawrence, February 24, 1979, and lives in Des Moines, Iowa, where he is
Resident Manager for Gold Crown Properties, Inc.
