Thomas Soper
Thomas Morgan Soper was born in Dartmouth, Devonshire, England, January
8, 1861, the son of John and Mary Soper. He grew to manhood in England.
At age 20 he came to Banford, Ontario, Canada, with his brother Harry. He
resided there until 1884 when he moved to Florence, Kansas. He soon came
to Medicine Lodge and worked on a cattle ranch. He later homesteaded in
Cedar Creek vicinity. In 1889 he married Nettie Cora Madden. Three children
blessed the home; Albert, Arthur, and Noble. He was baptized into the Seven
Day Adventist Church in 1899, at Cedar Creek. He was a charter member of
the local Adventist Church.
Thomas was a man with foresight and when he was sixty years old, he
planted an orchard, and lived to harvest fruits from it. He died June 20,
1957. Both his wife and son, Albert, preceded him. Though slight of stature,
he was a man who was held in high esteem by those who knew him.
Arthur was born 1896. While working in Canada, he met Norah Jackson, and
married her there in 1921 and later brought Norah and the children to Medicine
Lodge. Norah was born in Birminham, England, January 21, 1901. She moved with
her parents, two brothers and a sister to Canada in 1919.
From 1927, Medicine Lodge was the home of Norah and Arthur. He worked many
years for National Gypsum, then his health failed. Norah cared for him in
their home. Following his death in 1971, Norah bought a home and moved to
town where the Golden Agers and quilters at the Methodist Church filled a
great part of her life.
The six children of Arthur and Norah are: Arthur, Delores Hose, Noble T.,
Donald, Virginia Thrasher and William Soper. There were 20 grandchildren
and 10 great-grandchildren at the time of Norah's death in 1978.
Nobel J. and his wife Zelma Miller Soper live in Medicine Lodge where he
has his plumbing business and Zelma works for patrons of many years, in
homes all over Medicine Lodge. They are pillars in the local Adventist Church.
