Vaughn Spencer

I am LOretta Spencer, daughter of Michael and Mary Traffas, and the tenth
child of the family, which numbered 15. There were 8 boys and 7 girls, quite
a large family by today's standards. We all grew up one mile and a half south
of Sharon on a farm. We were a very close family and still are, with many
memories to share when we get together.
I met Vaughn Spencer when we were both working at Boeing in Wichita. He
came to my department to get a blueprint. We were married 6 months later in
     June 1943.
Vaughn was drafted into the Army in December of 1943, and was discharged
in 1946. He went to barber school and worked in Medicine Lodge at this trade
     for about 25 years.
My mother and my family moved to town in 1946, where she lived until her
death in 1966. We still live in the same house, and have raised 8 children,
     4 girls and 4 boys.
Marcia Jean, the oldest, married Wendell Dodson. They have 4 children, 2
girls and 2 boys, and live in Tucson, Arizona. Vaughn F. married Nancy Serra,
they live in Denver, Colorado, andhave a daughter, Erica. Louis married
Tomica Thomas; they have 1 boy and 1 girl and live in Garber, Oklahoma.
Barbara married Jo Oller; they have twin boys and another son and live in
Emporia, Kansas. Mark married Donna Scott and they live in Omaha, Nebraska.
Susan will graduate from K-State in Manhattan, in May of this year. Lori
and George are going to Barton County Community in Great Bend, Kansas.
Now that Vaughn and I are alone so much of the time, we sit and think how
rough some of the times were, and then we go back and remember all the good
things; the activities that the children engaged in provided us pleasure
that can't be measured. The good really outweighed the bad.
Vaughn is now driving anoil well service truck and does enjoy the out-of-
doors. We love living in Barber County, and think the finest people in the
world live here. I have been Sharon City clerk for several years and enjoy
it. I also work as a seamstress for Sharon Valley Luggage, where we make
     many fine articles.
