Donald R. Spicer

J.T. Spicer, my grandfather, came to Kansas in 1889 from West Virginia,
and settled on a farm in Thomas County, Kansas. Later he and his wife,
Hulda Garlow Spicer and family - including my father, Joseph Clyde Lynn
Spicer, moved to Crisfield, Kansas, for several years, then they moved to
     Barber County in 1903.
In 1910, my dad married Ella Reynolds. In 1916 they moved north of
Hazelton, where I was born and now live. I had two brothers, James T. and
Harold A., both deceased; three sisters, Margaret A., Verda M., and Lavone
     E. We all attended Maple Grove School in Cedar township and graduated from
     Hazelton High School.
My wife, Rose Diel Spicer, daughter of John and Mary Diel, was born in
Alfalfa County, Oklahoma, and graduated from Kiowa High in 1939. Rose and
I were married in December 1941, and moved to a farm northeast of Hazelton
     where I engaged in farming.
Our daughters: Donna Rose attended school and graduated from Hazelton in
1962, attended Emporia State for two years, later marrying Larry Secrest,
graduated from Citrus College in Azusa, California. They have three children -
Lance Emory, twins, Lana Michele and Brian David, the only set of twins in
the Spicer family. They now live in Iowa City, Iowa.
Brenda Lea, our youngest daughter, graduated from Hazelton in 1965 and
graduated from Northwestern State at Alva, Oklahoma. Brenda married George
Odell, Jr. and they have two boys, Zachariah Spicer and Madison Tyrell.
They bought the John McWilliams home in Hazelton and are now there, where
Brenda runs the Country Road Store with antiques, baskets, etc.
In 1959 we bought the home place north of Hazelton, where we now live,
making it a three generation homestead. I still farm and handle cattle.
This past winter, 1979, will be one to long remember - cold - wet - no
electricity - frozen water pipes 0 about out of wood for small stove and
     whatever.
We are both active in the United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Order
of Eastern Star, Clubs and serving on the Rural Water Board.
