George V. Spicer

George Vincent Spicer was born October 4, 1917, on a farm five miles
northeast of Hazelton. He is the fourth of five children born to Raymond
and Lillian George Spicer. George attended grade school at Maple Grove,
a rural school, and graduated from Hazelton High School in 1935. He later
     attended auction school in Missouri.
On July 24, 1940, George was united in marriage with Berniece Vogel of
Kiowa. Berniece was born December 12, 1921, in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma,
and was the last of six children born to Alvert and Elizabeth Vogel.
Berniece attended grade school at Friendship Rural School District 8, and
graduated from Kiowa High School in 1940.
We began our life together in Hazelton, then to the Raymond Spicer home
place three miles north of Hazelton. They later bought a home on the north
edge of Hazelton. The former owners operated a chicken hatchery on the
premises. They resided there until 1960, when they purchased the farm and
home where they currently reside, from Hilmer and Mayme Best. This farm
is located three mile north and one mile west of Hazelton.
George and Berniece had four children: Karen, born September of 1941,
Stanley, born in 1943, who suffered accidental death while riding a pony
at age 2 1/2, Samuel, born in January of 1947, and Susan, born in December
     of 1948.
George and Berniece have always been involved in agriculture, primarily
through wheat farming and raising cattle for market. George has continued
to auction, and in more recent years has obtained a real estate brokers
license, selling in Barber, Harper, and surrounding counties, and Oklahoma,
at this writing he auctions at the Medicine Lodge Sale, where he started in
     the early 50's.
Memories of the children growing up includes Karen and friends always
wanting to go to Kiowa to 'drag' main, get a coke, come back to Hazelton,
'drag' main a few times, then finally return homd. Doing the family shopping
at "Betty's Store". Always the cheese and bologna were the best. Dean Betty,
always patient with the kids. Needless to say - Betty's Store was everyone's
store and how we miss it!
Remembering too, the Moser family coming home to Hazelton in the fall in
time for their daughters to go to school after spring and summer tour with
their carnival throughout Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Then
storing and painting and repairing it through the winter, getting ready to
leave again in the late spring.
A specail memory of Percy Miller as basketball coach for George and many
others. His philosophy and coaching inspired many 'wins' and how to deal
     with the losses.
With highest respect we remember Mis Ona Blankenship, first grade teacher
for each of our children, and many, many more - having taught in Hazelton
     over fifty years.
Throughout our life together we have been actively involved in the
Hazelton Methodist Church, and are members of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern
Star. George has served numerous terms on the cemetery board. Berniece has
provided the music for many church services, and other community affairs by
singing. Both have witnessed the sophistication of the farming industry and
     the trend toward urbanization.
