Raymond Carl Spicer
Raymond Carl Spicer was born February 5, 1888. He was the seventh child
of James Thomas Spicer and Hulda Virgina Garlow. The family moved to Colby,
Kansas where he was born, from Fairmont, West Virginia. Later, the family
moved to Hazelton, Kansas to a farm.
He met and married Lillian George, daughter of JOhn George and Susan
Elizabeth Tracy, in March of 1909. They farmed the land, three miles from
Hazelton, now owned by their sons, George and Frank Spicer.
Ray was a rancher and stockman and enjoyed trading mules and horses. He
was an auctioneer and was known for his ability to entertain with stories
and rhymes. A generous man, he looked after the less fortunate members of
the community.
Lillian was a lovely, soft-spoken woman, who aided in family activities
and cared for other in their times of need. She cared for the nursery
children in Sunday School for years. Both were active in the Methodist
Church. Both had attended Maple Grove School. The land for the school was
donated by Lillian's father, John George.
Ray and Lillian both passed away in 1933. They had five children: Edna,
Maude, Frank, George and Ruth.
