James Spriggs
James Spriggs and Delilah M. Martin were united in marriage at the home
of her parents June 10, 1917 by Christian Minister Walter Mundell. James
was a native Kansan. His father was Irish, his mother was English. His
uncle, William Spriggs, was the first State Treasurer of Kansas. His mother
died when he was five years old. His uncle, William Spriggs, saw to his
early schooling. The three Spriggs brothers came to Barber County from
Doniphan County in 1900 to a cattle ranch northeast of Medicine Lodge.
James bought a farm from James Martin Hall in 1902. He grew wheat, kafir,
and other small grain crops; can and maize. Horses, mules and humans furnished
the power. Cattle, chickens, quineas, and pigs were for meat and game birds;
pheasants, quail, and milk, butter and eggs were not only a source of income,
but also served as wholesome food for farm meals. They enjoyed thier work
of farming and Delilah participated in the cultural activities of the
community.
A son, Wallace Edward, was born to the Spriggs on August 19, 1918. He
lived three months having died on November 22, 1918. On July 5, 1961,
James and Delilah moved to Medicine Lodge to their home in the same block
where Delilah was born and this was the first time she had experience in
the packing and moveing "operation process."
James died in July 1964. Delilah enjoys communicating with her and her
husbands nieves and nephews and their visits once each year. She is active
in the church, Bible study and enjoys Golden Agers and the school musical
programs and others. She also enjoys walking and the visits with her sister,
Margaret Watkins, the only two now living of their parents family.
