William B. Springer
William B. Springer was born 12-5-1837 in Platte County, Missouri. In 1850,
he moved to Anderson County, Kansas, and married Mary A. Campbell. They had
two sons: George W. and William F.
William B. came to Barber County in 1877. He was a highly respected and
prominent stockman and farmer. After his first wife died, he married Zula
Vaughn in 3-13-1879. Zula was born 12-5-1853 in Illinois. She came to Barber
County in 1875, with her parents. After their marriage Zula and William B.
resided in Nippawalla Township.
In June 1900, a friend of the Springer's stopped at their home. It was Carry
Nation on her way to raid Kiowa saloons. Zula and her daughters, helped Carry
wrap bricks for her raid. Before she left, Carry borrowed a bonnet and a
hatchet from Zula. She used both during her raid. Later Carry came back and
spent the night with the Springer family. Zula and William's daughter, Faye,
remembered vividly how scared she was when she had to sleep with Carry Nation
that night.
Five children were born to the marriage of William B. and Zula (Vaughn)
Springer: Lewis Springer, Ada (Springer) Duncan, Kate (Springer) Rozzelle,
Claude Springer, and Faye (Springer) Atwood.
William B. died 3-23-1912. Zula died at her home on South Oak street in
Medicine Lodge on 12-6-1934. The death followed a paralytic stroke.
