Boyd Spurgeon

The Boyd Spurgeon family has been in Barber County since the early 1900's.
Robert Boyd Spurgeon was born near Bluff City, Kansas, on April 8, 1909, the
son of Vernie L. and Lora Callen Spurgeon. Boyd lived with his family four
miles northeast of Medicine lodge during the years of 1921 and 1922. The
remainder of his school years were spent in or around Bluff City, Kansas.
In April of 1928, Boyd Spurgeon moved from Bluff City, Kansas, to a farm
south of Medicine lodge where he began a thirty-six year career in farming
and ranching. He worked for various farmers and ranchers in the Medicine
Lodge community until he was employed by George S. Lonker in 1934, on his
ranch twelve miles southwest of Medicine Lodge. At a country dance near Lake
City, Boyd met Agnes Snyder Thurman in September, 1932. They were married
     June 15, 1935.
Agnes was born September 22, 1904 near Hardtner, Kansas, the daughter of
Frank and Margaret Hart Snyder. Agnes attended Kansas State Teachers College
at Emporia and was an elementary teacher in Barber County for many years.
Agnes and Boyd lived on the George Lonker ranch after their marriage and
while living there, a daugther, Roberta, was born. When Roberta started
school the Second World War had created a teacher shortage and so Agnes
reluctantly agreed tol teach the country school, Dry Creek, where her
daughter was a first grade student. After that year, Agnes retired from
teaching until 1954 when she began teaching at Isabel, Kansas. She taught
at Isabel for four years and Lake City for seven years before retiring
     from the classroom permanently.
In the spring of 1958, Boyd and Agnes Spurgeon moved from the Lonker
ranch to a ranch near Sun City, Kansas. Boyd continued farming and ranching
there until March 1964, when the Spurgeons moved to Medicine Lodge. At this
time, Boyd got his real estate license and sold real estate in Wichita during
the winters of 19864 and 1965. In 1965, he and Agnes bought the Mound Street
Trailer Park in Pratt, Kansas. At this time Agnes retired from teaching to
help with the trailer park while Boyd worked for the Pratt Tribune. In 1971,
Boyd began selling real estate part-time for Scott and Hedges and continues
     to do so today.
Daughter Roberta graduated in 1960 from the same school her mother attended,
Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia. She has pursued a teaching career
since that time and has worked in classrooms in California, New Mexico and
Nevada. Roberta received a Master's Degree in Counseling from the University
of Nevada, Las Vegas, in August of 1978. She and her daughter, Traci Lindeman,
presently live in Pahrump, Nevada, where Roberta is employed with Nye County
     School District.
Boyd and Agnes are now retired in Pratt, Kansas, after having sold the Mound
Street Trailer Park. The Spurgeons still enjoy their many old friends in
Barber County an dlike visiting there frequently.
