Dwight Stone
My dad, Dwight Werner Stone, was born on the Stone farm southeast of
Pixley in 1928. It was the same house where his father, George, had been
born and reared.
After graduation from Medicine Lodge High School, he married Jean Ann
Sitler. Since neither of my parents were of legal age to obtain a marriage
license, their fathers, George Stone and Chet Sitler (my grandfathers),
obliged and made the trip to the courthouse for their offspring.
Dad and Mom were married November 26, 1948, in Medicine Lodge in the old
Christian Church. After a short honeymoon, Dad took his bride to the Stone
homestead to live, as had his parents, George and LaVon, and grandparents,
Frank and Elizabeth.
My parents were young, but they accepted their responsibilities as they
became full partners in the farm and dairy operation with my grandparents.
My grandparents and their daughters, Doris and JoAnn, moved into Medicine
Lodge, leaving my parents alone on the farm.
Kimberly Jean (Kim) was born in 1952, and I, another daughter, Cameron
Dean (Cam) in 1954. We were the fourth generation of Stones to live in the
family home. AFter a few years, we too, moved into Medicine Lodge, leaving
the farm home empty and eventually it was torn down.
Kim graduated from a Methodist College in Fayetteville, North Carolina,
where her husband, Cecil Newman was serving as a paratrooper with the U.S.
Army. After teaching serveral years, Kim and Cecil became the parents of
twins, Michael Paul and Georgia Ann, born June 1, 1976. They live in Lyons,
Kansas, where our Great-Grandfather, Frank stone, first settled when he
came to Kansas with his family from Illinois. Cecil is a public accountant
with a firm in Lyons.
I attended Wichita State University and received my degree as a Dental
Hygienist. I presently work with a doctor in Pratt. I married my high school
sweetheart, Nick Burns, who is a production accountant with the National
Gypsum Co. We have recently moved into our new home in Medicine Lodge.
The dairy cattle were disposed of and Dad became very active in the
American Sheep association, serving on the board for many years. My parents'
interst in sheep and livestock has taken them on many overseas trips, and
facilitate many new friendships.
Dad has lived all of his life in Barber County, and Mom is a native but
spent some time in nearby counties. Both have served in varioius leadership
capacities i the church and community, but probably their greatest pleasure
is playing grandparents to the twins, Mike and Ann Newman and Stoney Brice
Burns who was born July 13, 1979, to us, Nick and Cam Burns.
