Elisha E.W. Stout
E.W. (Lish to his friends), wife the former Elnora Hulick and three
children moved from Medicine Lodge to Lake City, Kansas, in December 1909.
Bernice was born the following year, joining her brothers Albert, Wilsey
and sister Margaret.
E.W. Stout came to Barber County when about five years old, with his
parents Dr. and Mrs. T.W. Stout from Gilboa, Ohio, in 1879. He lived in
Barber County until his untimely death at St. Francis HOspital, Wichita,
Kansas in 1919.
My mother, Elnora (familiarly known as Nora-Nona-Nonie) was born in
Toolsboro, Iowa. When a year old, traveled with parents and related Hulick
families by covered wagon to Nebraska. She came to BArber County about 1894
from Dorchester, Nebraska, to help her cousin Mrs. Sam Fager, with her
growing family. The Fagers lived south of Lake City. After a few years with
the Fagers, she went to Medicine Lodge to be a seamstress. In those days
they 'lived in' with the family until all clothes for the season were
finished. It was here she met and married Lish Stout, August 5, 1902. She
died in Bayard, Iowa in 1947.
Lish worked for J.W. Mertz Lumber Company and was transferred to Lake
City to manage the lumberyard.
The family were all very active in church, school and community affairs.
It was fun growing up in a small town. Everyone was your friend and playmate.
The whole town your playground. Social activities centered around school
and church.
The Methodist Church, the only one in Lake City, was attended regularly
by our family; Sunday School, Church, Jr. League in the afternoon for the
children, Sr. League in evenings when in high school. There were mid-week
prayer meetings and Sunday night service. Father took an active part in S.S.
and church. He was a Lay Leader and often filled the pulpit. Our ministers
and families were special friends and spent a great deal of time at our
home.
E.W. joined the Baptist Church in Medicine Lodge when young, and adhered
to that faith. He often attended Sun Ciyt Baptist helping out when he could,
so we had two churches. He was on the school board, with keen interest in
all activities. Mr. and Mrs. Shamberger were good friends. She taught piano
to Bernice and me. He was grade school principal and teacher. Our house was
large and had a spare bedroom so often accomodated a roomer. Many teachers
lived with us.
By the time Alvert was ready for high school, one had been organized at
Lake City. Glenn Hayard was hired As Superintendent-Princiapl and teacher.
Classes were held in the east room, second floor of the grade school. Albert
was among the first to go four years and graduate from Lake City High. In
1921, I was ready for high school, classes were held over the bank and hard-
ware store. Two more teachers were hired to join Mr. Hayard.
