Richard Melvin Strong
Richard M. Strong, only son of Richard N. and Dona Strong, was born
November 26, 1935, in the house at 216 North Market, where my mother lives.
My parents lived on a farm so I attended country schools. I started high
school in 1949 at Medicine Lodge. I drove to school for two years then my
parents moved to Medicine Lodge. I worked on various farms in the Deerhead
area through grade and high school. During my high school years, I worked
with Riley MacGregor's registered cattle and did garden work for Mrs.
MacGregor.
I graduated from high school in 1953. I attended Kansas State University
and graduated in 1958 with a B.S. degree in Agriculture Education. During
my college years, I roughnecked for various oil companies to pay my way.
In 1958, I married Johna Sue Fox and we had three girls. Linda Ann born
September 14, 1959 in Medicine Lodge, Cinda Lee, born August 24, 1961 in El
Dorado, Kansas and Lauri Lyn, born February 14, 1963 in Monahans, Texas.
I graduated from Kansas State University in January 1960 with a Master of
Science in Geology. My first job out of college was for Skelly Oil Company
in their ElDorado, Kansas Refinery. I worked at their platforming unit
which made platformate, a high octane consstituent of gasoline. I worked
for Skelly for two years, then went to work for Baroid Division of National
Lead Co., as a drilling fluid Engineer. They moved us to Monahans, Texas
for five years. I spent three years in Drilling Mud and moved into the
Chemical Department and sold Oil Field Chemicals the remaining two years.
While in Monahans I did some of the early Drillpipe corrosion work for
Bariod and published an article on Drillpipe corrosion using filming amines.
Baroid transferred me to Casper, Wyoming for four years where I continued
selling oil field and some industrial Chemicals in the states of that area.
Johna Sue left me and the girls for another man and my parents helped me
care for the girls until I remarried.
I married Eileen Kreamer on November 26, 1969, in the Christian Church
at Casper, Wyoming. In December, 1971 I went to work for Dearborn Chemical,
a division of W.R. Grace as an Industrial Chemical Engineer and moved to
Hobbs, New Mexico. We lived there for four years and I worked the states
of New Mexico, Southern Utah, Southern Colorado, and the copper mills in
Arizona. While working for Dearborn, I applied for use patents of Poly-
menthacrylates in Copper mill circuits.
After my Dad passed away in 1974, I wanted to be closer to my mother. On
March 1, 1976, I purchased the Dickey Appliance Store. When school was out,
Eileen and the girls moved to Medicine Lodge and we bought the house at
321 North Main. I belong to Ptmos Lodge #97 in El Dorado, Kansas, and am a
