John Suhler

John Suhler's parents and my grandparents, John and Margaret Suhler,
homesteaded six miles north of Sharon (Dale Inslee now owns the farm).
The John Suhler family came to the United States from Germany to become
     citizens of United States.
John Suhler, a son, came to America in 1881 at the age of 16, from
Germany and became a naturalized citizen in 1887. He first settled in
Illinois, later moving to Attica, Kansas; when he came to Harper that was
as far as the railroad went at that time. Later he settled northeast of
Sharon in Barber County. John Suhler farmed around Sharon; he was my father.
He was united in marriage to Jessie Stuart of Zenda, Kansas, on May 21,
1899. Jessie Suhler, my mother, came to Zenda with her brothers, sisters,
and parents by covered wagon and settled on a farm south of Zenda. John
and Jessie moved to a farm northest of Sharon when they were first married.
John Suhler was a resident of Barber and Harper Counties for over 63
years. He operated the first horse-drawn steam threshing machine in Barber
County and helped build more than 100 bridges and culverts around Sharon.
He was township trustee for over 20 years and took the United States Census
in Sharon and several other townships in Barber County for the years of
     1920, 1925 and 1930.
John was a charter member of the Modern Woodman Lodge, camp 5436. He was
chairman of the Barber County Central Republican Committee from 1942 to
1944. He and his wife were members of the Congregational Church and later
changed to the United Brethren Church. In 1912 they changed to the Sharon
Christian Church. John Suhler was Barber County's best checker player and
won many championship games in and out of the county.
John was born i 1864 and passed away in 1945; his wife Jessie was born
in 1976 and died in 1949.
The Suhler family were farmers. Our mother raised chickens and sold both
eggs and chickens to help pay the family grocery bills. Our mother also
helped the neighbor women do quilting.
Stanley and Raymond attended Sharon Grade School only; Lester and Gladys
graduated from Sharon High School. Gladys graduated from Northwestern State
Teachers College at Alva; Lester graduated from the University of Kansas.
I graduated from Sharon High school in 1928 and attended both the Wichita
Business College and Northwestern State Teachers College at Alva. During
the depression I raised turkeys for a few years and sold turkeys as far
away as Denton, Texas. In July 1952 I started to work for Boeing in Wichita,
Kansas. I married Ruth Miller June 14, 1953, in Wichita. I retired from
     Boeing in March 1971.
In closing I wish to state that I am pleased to have a part in the Barber
     County history.
