Lester Suhler

Lester Suhler spent his boyhood days around Sharon. He was raised on a
farm near Sharon. Graduating from Sharon High School, he was valedictorian
of his class of 1927. He attended Northwestern State Teachers College at
Alva, Oklahoma, for one year before transferring to the University of
Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, where he graduated from the school of journalism
     in June 1930.
Lester Suhler's first job was with Cappers Publications at Topeka, Kansas
for five years; then he worked for Child Life Magazine in Chicago for a
short while. In 1937 he started to work for Look Magazine.
Lester married Irene H olmberg, May 25, 1940, and they reared daughter,
Susan and son John in Des Moines, Iowa. The Suhler family moved to New
York when Lester was made vice-president for circulation with Look. In his
meetings with publishing people he always let it be known that he had been
a farm boy from Sharon, Kansas. He returned regularly with his family to
Attica's Memorial Day gatherings and always visited his home at Sharon as
well as visiting other relatives and friends in Barber County. He attended
the Indian Peace Treaty Pageants regularly.
Lester and Irene's children graduated from Kansas University in the school
of journalism. Son, John Suhler married journalist Charlotte Thompson. He is
president of the Comsumer Publications Division of CBS in New York. They
have three daughters. John and Charlotte's birthdays are the same year, same
month and day of the month.
Susan married journalist Bill Sheldon and she works in graphics at Boeing,
Wichita, Kansas. They have two sons.
Lester's interests included the Presbyterian Church where he was a faithful
sports enthjusiast; and his own family home where he was a gentle, loving
     husbind and father.
Lester retired from Look in 1969 and died in June 1977. He never forgot
his old classmates and friends at Sharon High School, including Mary Schiff,
