Edgar Sullivan

Ed Sullivan and his wife, the former Mattie M. Wood, came to Kansas in
the 1890's. Mother came to Anthony with the Oll Taylor family from Missouri.
Father came about the same time and lived with the Billy Tibbs family for
a while. That was when he and mother met. Father and his brother Charlie
lived in Hodgeman County, Kansas, for awhile and then came to Harper county.
Father bought two quarters of land four miles northwest of Hazelton where
he and Charlie lived together. Then he and mother were married at Anthony
in 1898. They moved immediately to the farm where they raised a family of
six, four daughters and two sons.
Father farmed and operated a threshing machine for a few years. He later
gave up the threshing machine and spent the rest of his life farming. He
and Charlie farmed as partners for several years. When they dissolved the
partnership, father took the north quarter with the house on it and Charlie
took the south quarter. Charlie continued to live with father's family, but
     each did his own farming.
Our family consisted of Clara, Nellie, Rosa, Willie and Lela Mae. Cappie
     passed away in 1979.
Mother died in 1932. After her death, father's health kept failing and he
lost his farm. He, Charlie and Clara had to move from the farm. They moved
to O.E. Sullivan's, (father's brother), south east of Kiowa. Father lived
with his daughters, Rosa and myself, until his death. His brother Charlie
passed away in 1940 and two weeks later, Father passed away.
The Cedar Valley schoolhouse was a sort of Community Center. Our family
all attended school there. Church and Sunday School were held there and
also programs for every occasion. All of the children in the family went
through grade school there. Clara, Nellie and Rosa were graduated from
Hazelton High School and Lela Mae and Willie, from Kiowa.
After graduation, Clara, Nellie and Rosa became teachers in Barber County.
Clara now lives in southeast Kiowa.
       Nellie married Homer Houston and they live in Hardtner. They have two sons;
Jr. Lee, and Buck Donald; five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
Homer and Nellie have retired and live in Hardtner. Rosa married Heber
Brown and they live in Kiowa.
Willie married Erma Yutzy and they lived in La Hara, Colorado, until his
death and she is living there at the present time.
Lela Mae married Clayton Murphyu and they live in Girard, Kansas. They
have two daughters and six grandchildren.
My husband and two sons were all in the military service. Homer is a
WWI veteran; Jr. Lee, WWII, spent one year in Germany, Buck, WWII, and
Korea - spent part of his service time in Japan and Korea. The father and
garndfather, the late G.W. Houston, was a Civil War Veteran and marched
     with Sherman to the Sea.
